Questions on the tiptronic transmission.
I'm just wondering if the 2002 and newer 996s had any changes to the tiptronic transmission? I've been driving a few different 996s lately looking for the right car. I drove a 1999 C2 with the tiptronic and I was NOT impressed with the transmission at all. My friends Audi is a tiptronic and that transmission is much better.
Was the tiptronic transmission ever updated throughout the life of the 996? If so, was it a noticeable improvement? I'm still leaning towards the 6 speed but there are some much better deals for tiptronics on the used market.

Mk II 2002+ cars got the 996 turbo Tiptronic which is stronger, shifts faster and has 250 shift modes.
Thats all I got, To be honest I have never driven a Tip Porsche other than a Cayenne.
I did not care for it on the wifes old Passat. Our current Audi is a 6 speed.

I am happy with my 2001. There is a difference from the 1999 tip. You are able to paddle shift without moving the shift **** to manual mode, but after about 6 seconds the auto mode takes over after the shift. It will start in 2nd gear most of the time in auto mode after it is warmed up to conserve fuel, which is fine with me. If I want to take off quickly, I put it in 1st gear when stopped.

I'm not very satisfied nor impressed with my 02 Tip.
Downshifts are great and fast, but upshifts are slow.
I frequently drive the Volkswagen DSG and feel they shift faster.

I wonder if anybody has ever monitored the vacume and electronics when the vehicle is doing its figuring. Then I'd figure it might be adjustable by altering thresholds for the switch to act and the forces used to shift gears in the trans.

My 2000 is a tip purely out of lazyness and the reduced rate of rms leaks, so it seems....when you get deep into it, I think it performs well, but driving around town shifts are early to conserve fuel.

another data point: My car had an engine replaced due to "bearing failure". Tips are supposedly less likely to grenade b/c you cant overrev them but personally I think thats a load of crap... plenty of engines granaded with no overrevs....

Tip? Did someone say tip?
I had a 2005.
The only reason I got a Tiptronic was because of Tim's STRONG recommendation, and HIGH praise of the 996 Tip.
First let me say that it took me about a year to really "learn" how to drive the throttle by wire tip. It takes a combination of double taps to the buttons at times and a kind of stab and release technique on the throttle. (Think of the stab and release as a way to get the computer to drop 2-3 gears, but with your foot).
If you're driving slow it does well, if you're driving fast in the canyons it does well. If you are driving leisurely then punch it, not so good. This is because the computer doesn't switch back and forth so easily.
Things that make it better:
Muffler hack
BMC filter or CAI
EVOMS Flash.

The pre 02 tip is a ZF unit(I think?) and the 02 up is a Mercedes one and the same as the the tt. The 02 up are pretty bullet proof but mine was replaced at 45,000 miles? RUF even did engine mods up to 600hp on the later version but stopped on the early version after too many blow ups. Do not think vacume plays a role in shifts. Does have a torque converter so will never compare with the Volkswagen dual clutch or the PDK.

Who made the early TIPs?
