Default Key On, Engine Off - what should Oil pressure gauge read? Oil Pressure Failure Ind

Hallo meine Freunde: (Hello my Friends!)

Please to excuse me if this question is not new however I have anxiety for this situation lol.

********************************
I have 03 996 911 C2 with 42K miles on it. She is a peach I love this auto.

I have been having a hassle with the dreaded " *Oil Pressure Failure indicator" *(Have the fault remedied at an authorized Porsche dealer ) please see image]

I decide to do an experiment: with the key in but the engine not running the oil pressure gauge reads 3 bars. What this means?
********************************

Also, The manual indicates that at 5K rpm the oil pressure should be 3.5K. Always it is much higher than this.

It is mostly high - like 5 especially in the beginning.

Question: are these 2 phenomenons related?
**********************************

Will the faulty situation prevent the oil pressure idiot light from going on in a catastrophic loss of oil pressure.

******************************
What do you reccomend - oil pressure sensor, oil sender unit?

Thank you

what oil are you using .... pressure is dependent of what type of oil, the thicker it is the higher the pressure.... yes, sending unit is a good start..... Willkommen!

Aloha ! Welcome to the Rennlist forum.

Page 9-16 of the service manual covers what that indication means. I see you read the owners manual diagnosis for pressure of 5.000 rpm should result in at least 3 bars. So you should be good.

Nobody has asked for pictures of your car yet but at some time somebody might mention wanting to see a picture since us kids like to see each others toys. Hi I'm nobody and if you care to show off your car please do

Thank you - an oil pressure sensor or the sending unit defect appears to be the konsens.

There fore my plan is to wait for the next oil change and have these parts replaced since because the oil must be drained to properly make the repair and this oil is kostly and it would not be good to the environment or the pocketbook to waste such oil after only 2,000 miles.

Thank you for helping me. Maybe I will write again when I have more problems But I hope I don't.

Welcome to Rennlist. We need pictures of your car.

When you post them make sure you translate the digital image from German to English so we can understand what we are looking at.

Oil does NOT have to be drained to replace the sender.

The sender/sensor is on the passenger side of the engine and screws in. It's not a hard job for a shop - under an hour labor. If you do it yourself you need long skinny arms if you don't have the car off the ground. It's easier from under the car if you have it on a hoist.

Here's a link to a DIY for that from another member.

These parts are almost maintenance items as pretty much everyone has one go at some point. Mine went off scale high and some break and show zero on the scale. A little less common is the reading where it's inaccurate by only a bar or two - but not unheard of.
