This is an atrocious design flaw, and doesn't indicate a gas gauge fault.
Hey rrspikemarty,
I actually recently found out that this is because the gas tank in the 996 C4S is made out of 2 separate tanks connected by an "overflow" (much like in a plane), this was done for space and weight distribution reasons.
If your car is half full when you start your drive it will give an accurate reading even if it drops below the "overflow" connector ( by computing based on the data from one fuel tank) , however if you then park your car with lower fuel levels (and you start it up again) it only reads the fuel in 1 of the 2 tanks.
Thats why it's good idea never to let your fuel levels drop below 1/3

Hey I contributed something

Cheers,

Sid

yeah, that's what i'd heard. You'd think a car that has cup holders, would have a better gas gauge ;-)

About 2 weeks ago I bought the car and just yesterday I was reading the manual and found out sure enough if I hold the key in the door to unlock or lock the windows operate down or up. Never knew that one. Great trick for here in Hawaii with the heat the sun makes in the car.

From my experience this is not unique to the 996 or Porsche. I believe they do this to make the foglight more noticeable.

Okay, I have been throwing a CEL light ever since I got my car. I bought a Code Reader (Harbor Frieght $56) and it pulled up Code 1126 & 1137 (I think) for bad pre cat O2 sensors. I removed them and cleaned them, no luck, replaced the left one with a used one......no luck. The CEL would come on just as the car would come up to temperature on the water temp.....60% of the time. Installed a new MAF

BINGO - JACK'S A DONUT - THAT FIXED IT!!!

Three things that make me cringe I learned from my 1999 Dealer brochure that just came in. And I quote from page 15

"Each engine is tested rigorously---on the bench for up to half an hour, with a full minute nonstop at redline!!!!!!!!!

Then a rolling road test. And ultimately , the final exam: 90 minutes on the Autobahn, where every 911 off the assembly line must satisfy perhaps the worlds most demanding , and some say most fortunate, driver- a Porsche test driver."

"Each new 911 must slow from 90% of its top speed to 62mph 25 times. Consecutively. Without suffering significant brake fade."

1. So there are two schools of thought on breaking in a motor, apparently Porsche takes the rough road.

2. Some yahoo was given the keys to my car for 90 minutes at unlimited speeds when it had no miles and the crap was beaten out of it and the factory sanctions it.

3. Our cars are place under load to 156.6mph 25 times in a row when they are brand new and the brake pads are not broken in any way I have ever read about. There would be no reason to try and break in your new Porsche when you received, because the darn thing is beat all to heck anyway.

This could explain a lot with these engines, would be a neat graph to see trans bearings and IMS failures vs test drivers name.

In general this question would be better off on its own thread, this my not get much attention on this one....

I think the answer in the vauge sense is YES, but 997's also come with 19" wheels and for those I dont know the fitment. (you said aftermarket) The best thing to do is to post what the potential wheels you are looking to fit onto the 996 WB including width and offsets for front and rear - then you get get a specific answer. I am almost 100% certain the 996 WB will fit the 997 though maybe not the other way around in ALL cases

You will miss your car when it's gone..... and even if you replace it, there will never be one just like it. Live in the moment and be thankful for today

Your rear tires will last a LOT longer if you set the camber to neutral, which is the least they can be set at.

"stabbing" the throttle on a tip will immediately shift the transmission to the lowest gear possible for the speed you are traveling. It will hold it there for approx 8 seconds unless other throttle input is applied.

The PSM computer does some interesting things on its own volition. I have to refresh my memory on that though.
