Compared to the year before the 996 was made:
aerodynamics were improved so the drag co-efficient was lowered from 0.33 to 0.30. This was achieved by the sloping of the headlights and the windscreen plus making the door handle flush and body parts fit more closely together.
The new engine is watercooled, the car is bigger in all directions and has more electrical toys then ever, BUT the car actually weighs 50 kg's less then the the previous model
The engine volume was decreased 200 cc to 3387 cc, but the power is up 14 bhp. to 296 bhp

If you leave your car locked for 7 days or more the remote will not function and you have to use the key, this is to conserve battery power.
98-02 Stereo head units can be easily replaced and the stock amps and speakers can be used
03+ have the Most bus so this cant be done.

Three Wheelin'
When cab owners put their hard tops on in the fall, it feels like you just got a new car. The car rides differently with the weight of the top. It's quieter. A lot more head room. I can actually hear the stereo in traffic.
But it sure is nice to store the top for the nice seasons and get some open air time.
It's two...two cars in one.
(Oh, yeah.....and you can use the free car wash at the local Porsche dealership during crappy weather when you'd still like a clean car.)
I really didn't expect the car to be so different depending on which top was in use.

Speakin' of "things you didn't know...." I've not yet found THE resouce/list of "things that you should expect will fail and when" for the 996 - has that been published ever? sort of the preventative maintenance guide, if you will...
First post...sorry if missed something in the FAQ's...

The 996 is really great to drive on those perfect sunny days -
When the weather is crappy, heavy rains, poor driving conditions, snow, or whatever nature throws at it.... its AMAZING !!
the link has a nice facts page with background and details of the cars. It would be a good read for someone thinking of getting a 996

1. The rear suspension design of the 996 is virtually the same as the one on the 993. The 993's rear suspension was such a leap forward in design compared to the earlier (964-previous) that it was carried over to the 996 and 997 basically unchanged (and also to save money), just tuned to the new chassis/weight.
2. The reason why 4L is the maximum displacement that will be probably be achieved on the current flat six is because Porsche is and has been using the same machining/boring tool on the engine cases over the years. It can only make the same distance for the in-between piston spaces, thereby, making every displacement increases over the years, with thinner walls in-between.
Read both of these in one the Porsche design books on the 996, when the 996 first came out.

2003 C4S gas tank design is such that if the gas in the tank falls and remains below a certain level, the gas gauge does not register gas added to tank. I have not figured exactly where that point is, but in my C4S, if my gas has fallen below that magic level, i have to add approximately 1/2 tank of gas for the gauge to begin registering correct levels again.
This is an atrocious design flaw, and doesn't indicate a gas gauge fault.
