Crazy Insurance Premiums - Multi-car discount
I am posting this, just to that if anyone out there is doing what I was doing, DON"T. It's time to get all your cars on one insurance policy.
I had been insured with Esurance. They treated me fine, but when I decided to buy my Porsche, they wouldn't insure it. So, they suggested 21st Century, and 21st Century gave me a good price, so I insured my Porsche with them.
Then, I bought a 2001 Subaru to use as my winter/maintenance car, and had it insured with Esurance. (For whatever reason, I had this thought in my mind that the 21st policy was ONLY for the Porsche. )
Today, it hit me that I can obviously only drive one car at a time, and I am paying for single driver coverage for both the Subaru and the Porsche on two different policies. If they were both on one policy, I obviously couldn't drive both at the same time, so I would get a discount, right? Right!!
So, I called 21st Century, and asked for coverage for both the Subaru and the Porsche. The price for the Subaru on 21st Century was about half of the premium on the Esurance plan. Just as I had suspected. Then I called Esurance to cancel the Subaru, and they re-rated the policy, since there was now only one car on that policy.
SURPRISE!! The price to insure the Volvo Only was $40 less than to insure both the Volvo and the Subaru. CRAZY!!. What, a multi-car discount that - in effect - gave you the second car for FREE!!. So, methinks, time to really put this into gear. How about putting all three cars on one policy - (I'm such a genius ).
The cost of insuring all three cars with 21st Century is $400 less (for 6 months) than the cost of insuring the Subaru and the Volvo on the Esurance plan, and the Porsche on the 21st Century plan. Don't ask me to explain why I just figured this out - I was just blown away by the price add-on for insuring the Volvo as a lone vehicle.
So, the moral of the story is to insure ALL your vehicles with a single insurer, and if you can - insure your house with the same company as well. Maybe your situation will shake out differently, but you should at least LOOK at the multi car/house discount. You might be surprised at what you find.

Totally agree with your thinking and I've been with USAA since I was commisioned 20-some years ago. They even helped me with a policy for my 78 Trans Am.

I don't think that Hagerty insures "modern" Porsches. I had my '73 insured with them, but if I remember correctly, they wouldn't insure my 2004 when I called them.
Esurance won't insure any high value automobiles, Porsches, Lambo's, Ferrari's, Bentleys, etc. And what's wrong wtih Esurance? Inexpensive, reliable coverage, and good claims service.

As far as esurance, I don't want this to get into a debate about insurance companies. As long as you feel good about your decision then that's all that matters.

Here is a quote from Hagerty's website:
I think that was the deal with Hagerty. They will do stated value, but only on collector cars that are not used on a daily basis. Certainly my 2004 Targa and 2001 Turbo don't qualify. They are not what Hagerty considers collector cars, and I was driving each of them daily.
Honestly, I have been insured with a number of companies over the past 10 years. Based on their treatment of me following the wreck of my 2004 Targa, I recommend 21st Century highly. But I also realize that everyone has their own experiences with these insurers. The experience that I had may not necessarily be duplicated by someone else.

Vehicles that may not qualify
Hagerty specializes in coverage for collector vehicles. Regrettably, there are some vehicles we do not cover due to their limited collectability, the way they are used and/or the extraordinary risk their use may pose, including:
Camping, off-road or utility-type vehicles
Daily-use vehicles
Commercial-use vehicles
Motorcycles with performance modifications
Any vehicle modified with nitrous components
Dune Buggies

anyone with an AmEx card might want to consider insurance thru them - I have been with them for years and the rates are wicked LOW - have house and 3 cars but they wont insure multiple homes? (so I get raped on the second homeowner policy at brand X insurance co)
they also wont insure "collectible" cars... otherwise I would get a permanent license on my current car as it qualifies
