Cost to replace a Clutch?
#2
You'll probably get better replies than this one, but in case there are very few with similar experiences, here's what little I know. To drop and replace the engine in my 2001 cab, (previous owner broke it) I'm paying $2,500 labor (very experienced Porsche mechanic in GA) So my guess is that if the procedure is the same plus pulling the pressure plate, flywheel resurfacing, parts etc. etc. you're looking at $3,500 to $4000. Which would jibe with my friend Scott whose wife just burned through a clutch in his 993 and it was $4000 or so to replace that one. Good luck with it. Let us know how you make out.

Damn!!! I just through the invoice away this morning. I just replaced the clutch on my '99 996 about two months ago and I can't remember the total but IT was around $2,000 to replace the clutch and flywheel including parts and labor. This was at a Porsche dealer. I don't know how much for the clutch only. It's late right now but I can look through the garbage tomorrow and let you know if I find it. One note of caution, if your clutch is starting to fail you should replace it before you damage the flywheel. I had about 40,000 miles on my car and I could feel that the clutch was going out but I delayed changing it. I let my 18 year old nephew take the car for a drive and in a few miles he completely destroyed the clutch and damaged the flywheel because it got to hot (according to the dealer). It's actually a pretty funny story. I was sitting next to him at a stop light and he wanted to fool around and smoke a Honda Civic next to us. We playfully reved to challeng the Civic and the driver in the Civic was a good sport and played along. Well, when the light turned green my nephew gased it and let out the clutch so slowly that it heated up and went into complete slip mode. Since the car was redlinindg he kept on shifting. He had gotten into 3rd before I had a chance to stop him. Of course we were only going about 30 miles per hour with the car redlined in 3rd while the Civic had smoked us. I have nevere seen anyone so embarassed in my life Just thought I would share this. <img src="graemlins/c.gif" border="0" alt="[ouch]" />

I have a place by my house that fixes ONLY Porsches that quoted me $ 1,700 for an OEM. My clutch is gone, the car doesn't even move now. So, I'm thinking of some other things.... I did a search on this site and have some questions:
1) Should I go with a performance clutch? Pro's and con's?
2) Should I go with a lightweight flywheel? I hear that you may have to reprogram the computer......
THANKS!

The standard warranty is 4 years from date of purchase or 50k miles, whichever comes firt. So you definetly take it to the dealer and see if they will cover it under warranty.

Clutch and flywheel for around $2000? that sounds about right. Here in the UK, the leading independent Porsche specialist charges around £500 to change the 996 C2 clutch compared to around £850 for the 964. It's a simpler job.
I know this is UK, but most things are more expensive over here - if you pay more than $1000 for the clutch fitted then I think you are being ripped off!

Typically, in a case like yours, Porsche will take care of labor and you will only have to pay parts. My neighbor has a 993 Targa whose clutch let go 1 year out of warranty and that's what they did for him. Apparently, the US drivers go through clutches like there is no tomorrow and Porsche wants to keep on selling stick cars here without any litigation.... On a side note, how can you go through a clutch in 23,000 miles? I mean I do 100,000 miles with 5,000 on the track with the same clutch...

My '99 C2 clutch went at 39K. I too thought it may have been a warranty problem as 39K is just too soon to have a clutch wear out. Boy was I wrong. Dealer said they were expecting clutches to wear out between 30-60K. Yours does seem a bit premature. Regarding costs - and my prices are directly from the Porsche dealer - $600 for the Porsche clutch kit and $1000 for the labor. Friend who ownes a few old 356's contacted a very good mechanic he knows who works only on Porsches and was given the same $600 for the Porsche clutch kit and $400 labor! Look around for a GOOD independent may be the best advice here. Don't think the engine needs to be dropped - mine was done in one day. FYI - this is SoCal so nothing comes cheap. Good luck, I doubt it will be a warranty issue, but it's worth a try. I went to the service manager and had a good talk with him before deciding not to go to PCNA. This dealer (Newport Auto Center in Newport Beach, CA) has been VERY good with all my other warranty issues, so no real reason not to doubt the sincere talk I had with them.

Here's an update.... Called the Porsche dealer and they basically said it's a wear item and they wont cover it, ANY of it, AND they want $ 2600 to R&R. Took it to a shop out by me with a good reputation. Looks like $1,450 out the door with OEM parts, but we'll see what happens when they open her up......

JM,
I just bought the car March 1st and put only 3,000 miles on it before this problem surfaced. I guess the previous owner had a lead foot? Anyone here in PA or IN used to own a 99' speed yellow 911 with custom leather seats, painted dash and a Remus "Romulous" cat-back?

$2600 is outrageous! RUN from that dealer. Like I said above, I only (ha - only!) paid $1600 and that was at the Porsche dealer. $2000 for labor for a one day job is getting jobbed in my opinion.
