Is there any play in the drivetrain?
Along with the ongoing (possible) release bearing noise, I notice, at idle, that when I engage the clutch quickly and release (jerk the car forward or reverse) I can hear a clank sound. It sounds as though there is some play somewhere along the drivetrain. I can also hear it under hard acceleration in first when I press the clutch to go into second. Any help would be great.
The regional manager is wants to hear my (possible) release bearing as it was replaced twice in one month.
Can this be a tranny problem?

The flywheel has a built in movement to it that deflects much of the abruptness when engaging the clutch. The 2 plates are connected and pressure is applied by the use of springs. A bad spring can cause noise and looseness between the 2 plates. Whether it is the transmission or anything in the clutch assembly, you will need to have the tranny pulled. Testing for the proper operation of the flywheel is standard practice for the dealer when the transmission is pulled. The flywheel is only allowed to move something like 12 mm to be within specs.

Maybe I should look at a schematic of the assembly. The only visualization I have in memory is that of my '74 Celica. I'm sure this one is a little different.
