Default Anyone know where I can get a deal on a rebuilt tranny

I've got a 99 C4 Cab, just diagnosed with a tranny that's ready to go.

Does anyone know a good source for a rebuilt?

Does Porsche offer a reasonable exchange?

MotorMeister doesn't have them as Porsche won't sell them the parts.

Anyone have any experience with this?

i am not sure you can rebuild 996 trannies just yet. i dont' think porsche sells individual parts to shops. perhaps try porsche wreck yard... ie porsche heaven, i think is the store name. you'll see their ad in panorama or excellence.

Porsche doesn't even list the parts for the tranny -- it is a non-serviceable item. Basically you remove and replace. Porsche sells brand new and remanufactured trannies but as of last month they didn't have remanufactured trannies in stock. My tranny was fine -- just a broken mount -- but I ended up getting a brand new one for $10,000. Luckily didn't have to pay for it.

Follow Mooty's suggestion and look for a used tranny from a dismantler. I would've gone that route if I had to pay out of my own pocket. Try L.A. Porsche Dismantlers (http://www.911pcar.com/ ) along with Porsche Parts Heaven.

Good luck.

What were the signs that your tranny was going?

For a new one, yes. I was lucky I didn't have to pay for it! I think a remanufactured tranny is around $6K but they didn't have any in stock. A used tranny from a dismantler should cost around $3,500 depending on mileage.

I believe Brian Copans/BMCG rebuilds race trannies for GT3/GTR. I'm not sure they work on the regular 996 tranny. Give them a call and double check.

You probably got a remanufactured tranny. A brand new tranny costs $10K. The tranny replacement cost $11,600 including labor.

Yes they do, call up Sunset Imports in Beaverton, Oregon and ask them for a price on Porsche rebuilt trannies (I don't have the .X part numbers for the 99 rebuilt transmission). They will take your transmission as a core-exchange and send a genuine rebuilt (with 2-year warranty) transmission from Porsche AG to you or your dealer for a lot less money (50%) than what your dealer (or what is posted here) will/can sell it for. You might also want to ask them about individual replacement parts availability for transmissions as I thought PCNA/PAG was finally starting to make stuff available?

Definitely check out Sunset Imports and other shops to see if they have trannies in stock. My tranny was ordered directly from Porsche so I might have gotten it for less somewhere else -- but it wasn't my dime so I didn't shop around.

I think I can help here. I have a tranny from Porsche in a box. It's for a project car that I am building, but owner of car told me to go ahead and help you out if you need it now. I will get him another one.

$ 5,500.00 + $ 1,300.00 core charge. Shipping & handling extra of course.

Thanks guys. I'm doing the research now. Call in to the dealer and Brian Copans... and thanks Theo, I'll get back to you shortly.

MotorMeister says they could do a 996 if they could only get the parts, but Porsche won't provide.
