996 blown head gasket/engine?
Asking if anyone's heard of this on behalf of a friend. He's got a 996 C2 Cab, and upon return from vacation, started it, and tons of white smoke poured from the left exhaust. I've read a history of blown motors for the 996 Turbo (and M3's hehe), but only found one other case of a 996 N/A blowing an engine. Anyone heard of this? I'm guessing it's the head gasket.
The dealer's got the car, they said they may tear the engine down on Monday depending on what the Porsche rep says. They might give him a new engine because Porsche might want to investigate why the engine blew. It will be covered under warranty, either new engine, or rebuilding what's there depending on what the rep wants.

My 01 C4 Cab blew its head gasket on June 30. Car still sitting in shop waiting for new engine, which came from Germany but is stuck somewhere in US. Meeting dealer's GM next Tues. to vent my frustrations! Meanwhile driving a courtesy Explorer provided by dealer. <img src="graemlins/sleep.gif" border="0" alt="[sleep]" />

The dealer pulled the head off, and the gasket's gone, the block is cracked. New engine is on the way. Dealer gave him a Boxster Tip to drive.

Sorry to hear what has happened to your cars. How can one tell if there's a blown head gasket other then white smoke coming out. Is there a huge power loss while driving or ticking noise? Just wanted to know the symptoms so if it happens to me won't be asking myself what happened. Hope everything gets fixed right away. Good luck to all. Regards. Mike

Mine blew white smoke & there seemed to be a sweet smell (antifreeze?).
Anyways I want to thank all who contributed to this forum & it gave me lots of peer info. when I talked to the GM today re my C4Cab sitting in his garage for 4 weeks. At the end they offer us:
- an extended warranty;
- if my wife still doesn't feel secure with the repaired car (my wife said it's like a person with a transplanted heart!) they're willing to have us trade it in for another P-car without making any $ on the deal (other than paying the salesman's commission).
I think it's fair gesture of goodwill on the dealer's part (I also rubbed it in re our Calgary peer driving a Boxster while I drive an Explorer as a courtesy car). Thx. so much again.
