Hello all
Just returned from a trip to Toscany, Italy in my Porsche with wifey.
We passed Stuttgart on our way and I have a few pics I want to share for you that haven't seen the factory.

My wife and I are considering a European trip in the spring and I have put Stuttgart on my wish list (wanting to visit both Porsche and MB). What else is there to do in and around the city? My Travel Guide notes that the city is mostly an industrial town with "uninspired architecture" (I've ripped that page out before she sees it).

Stuttgart may be an industrial town, but if you are a Porsche enthusiast then it will be a highlight of your trip. We didn't do much on our visit other than tour the factory, but it was time well spent. When you are there, ask about having lunch in the Gastekasino--a memorable experience!
As far as other stuff to do beyond the MB museum... there's always German beer.

Its Christmas market (month of December) is considered the best in Germany by the world's most experienced shoppers (flight attendants). My wife loved it and felt it worth a 9-hour flight each way to be there just 24 hours. Hundreds of small wooden stalls - selling crafts, food, and a warm wine drink that is traditional there. In the summer, the beer garden is very nice. Lots of good restaurants .... to my inexpert palate, at least.
There is a broad, pedestrian only shopping district (the Koenigstrasse) with cafes, etc., and an "old town" with the kind of small specialty shops my wife really enjoys browsing. All this is within easy walking distance of the central bahnhoff (train station) and a nice hotel where our crews stay.
The surrounding countryside is rolling, green, and very attractive.
By the way, when I rode the train out to the nearby MB museum this winter (15 minute ride from downto), it was closed for a complete rebuild. Check before you waste the trip out there.
You should make advance reservations for the Porsche factory tour. I have done it via email with as little as 3-4 days notice (tell them you are an owner). No res required for the Porsche museum.

Goodspeed,
I will also be flying into Munich, then staying in Austria, and then will be travelling down into Tuscany.
Do you have any suggestions for places to stay in Tuscany, or anywhere in Northern Italy?

Don't miss Lake Como. 1 hour drive north of Milan. (you pass Monza on the way there) From Como go along the small road on the west side of the lake (heading to Menaggio) and enjoy the most beautifull area along Lake Como. In a small village approx. 15 min. from Como is a nice hotel in a city called Carate. Hotel Fioroni, €80,- for a double room right at the lake. You wont regret it. (see picture) In Toscany we lived in different Wine and Olive farms called "Agro-turistico" in Italian. Nice rooms from €60-120 for double. Beautifull situated right in the middle of the wine and olive fields. Usually with a pool.
Have fun.

Thanks to all for the great tips and suggestions. We have Tuscany on our proposed agenda as well. While I'm getting free travel tips, any ideas on Switzerland (one proposed route is: Frankfurt to Stuttgart through Switzerland to Milan)?

Be sure to check out Konstanz. It'a a small village right on the border between Germany and Switzerland. In fact the border goes through the town.
I think it's the only german town that was not bombed during WW2 for fear of hitting the Swiss side (neutrality and all that)
There is a lake (Lake Konstanz) and a small island with lots and lots of butterflies
Also second the post on lake Como. Simply amazing! Make sure you visit Bellagio on the lake. In Bellagio is a small hotel called "Hotel Swiss" their restaurant has an apetizer called "shiatte" or "shyatt" that's not on the menu. Just fabulous.
Damn! I feel like taking a vacation now.
