Talking Thump at rear when accelerate!

I've been encountering a clunk at the rear sometimes when I accelerate from a low speed (around 30 mph at 3rd gear). Car is a tip 996tt. Mechanic said the engine/tranny mounts are tight. The subframe is ok. The sway bar and U/CV joints are all ok. The "thump" doesn't happen all the time. Mechanic was unable to find the problem. Any idea?

Weird one. Did the mechanic check the struts/dampers/springs etc?

Is it when you shift or just on acceleration. In my 6speed going up through the gears you can just be slightly off with the clutch pedal transition and get the thud, but not just during acceleration. Is the noise coming from the left or right, does it sound metal or how?

Sounds like they checked it, but I had something similar in my 997S, and my mechanic went right to the rear sway bar and tightened it up (it was a little loose). You couldn't tell it was loose by looking at it (I watched him fix it) but it simply needed to be tightened.

I've already asked the mechanic to look at the susupension system and it was ok. Could it be some sort of a "spark knock" or detonation when I press the gas pedal?

On the 757 or 767 it is usually a baggage handler or stowaway hiding in either the baggage compartment or the wheel wells. Make sure you don't have a midget taking you for a free ride!!!

Superfans, I've seen several of your posts now. You have more problems than anyone else. It sounds like you have checked everything OK. IMO, Perhaps you are overly sensitive to the "typical" performance car experience.

Is this the same thing you were describing as a "backfire" in your previous topic? (the muffled backfire does sound like a "thump")

If it is, my '02 TT Tip does the same thing occasionally, only when cold. Usually if I'm on the gas right after a hard turn. I've considered bringing it up to the dealer, but I'm sure they would be "not able to duplicate", especially now in the warm weather.

I will probably put it on my final service list before my warranty runs out.
If you find a solution, please post!

Sorry guys, it isn't pretty to have a car with all these problems (especially a p-car). I am not overly sensitive. I actually drove around with the mechanic inside the car and he also heard the "thump" noise from the rear. He heard it but unfortunately can't find the problem. I was hoping that perhaps the enthusiasts from this site could shed some light on the problem of my car.
