Maybe remind these people of the old world way of doing things, like common sense/courtesy. Explain that although they may feel it's "easier" to let insurance "handle it", their kid will raise their insurance rates, which in the long run, will cost more than fixing your car. Again, insurance is a last ditch effort, to reduce your losses. With insurance, you WILL (most likely) have losses.

Overboosted28 is spot on. The reported claim will cost them more in jacked up rates than having your car fix right. The fact there is no police report should help with no Carfax as once there is that you are done for no matter how minor it was. If you could go your own route you would be fine. No you just need to convince them that handling it outside of insurance is also in their best interest.

When parts are ordered with the VIN number for repair at a body shop, it usually reports to carfax unless you have someone inside that will do you a favor.
