What's next?
So, with all the exploding values on air cooled turbos, especially 993tts, what can you safely mod, play with, drive and enjoy?
I had a 930 factory slant sold just before the bubble, now a good one is 125k and you can never drive it, let alone mod one. I also had a 993tt, same deal.
I've also had a few 997s, I think the 997tt is the "new air cooled turbo". They have a classic look, manual g50 based tranny, mezger 964/gt1 derived power plant, infinitely mod-able, relatively uncommon (only about 2500 07-09 997.1 6mt imported to USA), and still have the "feel".
Recently I bought another 997.1tt, I have to tell you prices are stabilizing or even ticking up for good specimens.
I think the next must have turbo will be the 997.1 6mt cars. The 997 turbo is next. Thoughts?

I think you hit it on the head. It's to the H2O pumpers. I agree I don't like the headlights of the 996TT. But it is the best deal now. Though for me the move would be to the Cayman. A GTS and maybe down the road a GT4, though unless they start pumping out many, the GT4 will remain a collectible. Just IMO.
I got a sub 20K 97 TT, only through early part of summer. I'm driving it! Value be damned.

Don't get me wrong, the 997 Turbo is my 2nd favourite turbo but I don't think the price is going anywhere but down on these cars. The simple reason is supply. I stopped counting at 100 on cars.com and there are more than a dozen on Canadian autotrader. GT3 supply is substantial too. Except for the RS's, count on these depreciating as well. Now if you have a 3.8 or even better, 4.0 RS, take real good care of it.

997.1TT 6 speeds can be had for bargins. (For Now)
You can easily bolt-on and tune to get a rocketship ride. Nice all round 911 to own IMHO.
Not a screamer like the GT3 and not as interesting as a 964T or 993TT, but it really does everything well.
People tend to walk past them in a crowd of other porsches.... So perhaps in 15 years it might have more street appeal?

How about a GTR? I test drove one certain it'd be boring based on what I'd read. The car is a blast to drive and with just $4k in mods runs mid 10 second quarter miles at over 130mph. The only downside is it gets a lot of attention for some reason I really don't understand.

When I was shopping last year, I couldn't believe the bargains for 997.1 turbos. Low mile examples were in the low $70's. If I didn't have my heart set on a 993 turbo, I would have been more than thrilled with an 07' or 08' turbo. My issues with them are: it looks like you can have any color as long as it's silver, they are definitely in the GT category off the showroom floor and need some suspension work to wake up the handling (GT3 bits would do it), the front bumper is kind of a let down for me, something more aggressive would help a bunch (not Gambella crazy though!). I would expect the prices to slowly creep up over the years from their bottom but so so many more were made than 993's so you're not likely to see values rise at anywhere near the same rate. As with our market, the most limited/desirable/low mileage models will drive the prices.

very pleased with the combo of the 3tt and 7tt.
Its weird, among porsche people, the 7tt might as well be a base 1997 boxster, but among the general population, i've gotten far more commentary about it than the 3tt.
great car though, i'm surprised they didn't import more than 2,500.

probably cause it was the "recession porsche turbo". I also agree that the 997tt will appreciate way before the 996tt for a variety of reasons, not to mention comparatively that there were over 8k 996tt imported in the the us market.

Here in Florida it seems to change! Took my wife to a nice restaurant the other day and they moved a Ferrari 458 out of the way so I could park the 993tt outside the lobby! first time at that restaurant and we will very likely go back
