Default old tires

The 96 turbo that I just bought has new rear tires and the front tires look new but are from 2006. I am driving the car a few days a week and do not see any dry rot on the fronts but old tires are a bad thing on a sports car. Would you replace with two new front S02's or is there a better street tire that you guys like and get a set?? The car has 996 turbo hollow spoke wheels on it.

Get rid of the decade old tires asap. Just gotta remember a blow out or failure on any tire is real bad. In the front can be catastrophic. I know it's bad joo joo but I have miss matched brands front and rear before (just once) and made sure the tread pattern was very similar. I did not have any problems with them and would do it again before I'd use 10 year old tires

Personally I'm not a fan of the SO2s, for how much they charge for N spec tires I would never re-purchase.

If you do a search, even more so on the 993NA forum the range of tires to be recommended is quite broad. What is your price range is usually the determining factor?

No issues with price - Michelin PS2s seems to be the long time benchmark tire. Unfortunately the newer Super Sports aren't available in WB config.

A lot of the lower tier tires have pretty good feedback too - Sumis III, Hankooks V12, Continental DWs

^^^^^ Hankook V12's. On my 4th set and can't beat the bang for your buck. If you want better pricey tires then maybe the Yoko AD08Rs

I'm in the exact same position as you, picked up a 1996 turbo last week that has been sitting for the last 7 years! Tires look brand new but are still coming off! IMO never save on tires or brakes! It's the cheapest life insurance there is!

These tires were 6 years old……Saved a few bucks buying on E-Bay………..Only 400 miles and no track time…. doing 60 on the highway…..Lucky I was not killed or crashed the car !

I had a complete blow out at about 75 mph on the rear tire of a BMW 1200 RT-P. Not fun at all. Thankfully it was a run flat and I had enough sidewall to get off of the freeway before I got run over. If it was the front I don't think I'd be here. Tires mean EVERYTHING.

dump them if you plan to drive the car.

don't buy SO2s even if you could find them, there are many better tyres on the market currently.
+1 for the Yoko ADO8s

Scott, get hankooks V12's , that's what I buy for all my 993's and for a set for your car you will pay about $800 , discount tires has them and that includes all the warranty , I use those on my 996 twist and they look amazing

I was looking at V12 and I got told that Hankooks V12 evo are getting replaced by evo2 in 2014 (with different thread). So unless the price is much better on evo vs evo2, you should get evo2, the manufacturing date will be newer and if you need to replace one tire later, you will be able to get a new evo2 but probably not the olders evo. See images for the difference.

Finished up more mods and now tires
I too need a new set of tires. My PS2s have lots of tread but have become hard. I have no traction in the rears and feels like I'm on a wet surface every time I get into boost. The man date is 4508 with 7k miles or so.
I'm going to look into the Hankook v12s
Right now I'm running my Nt01 on the street to keep safe.

I have been through 3 sets of the V12's. I know they're not the absolute best tires, but for the price and acceptable performance/wear they are a great deal. I know I'll be slammed for admitting it, but I've done Laguna Seca twice on these tires before I got a second set of wheels/tires. They worked better than I had thought they would. The first time was in steady/heavy Dec. rain.

The new tread pattern looks like it should work a bit better with a little more meat in the center. It looks like a solid treadblock with voids for draining as opposed to seperate treadblocks.

Default Sumitomo trial

I got about 3000 miles each on two sets of Pirelli Pzeros rear tires. Street only. Enough! So for the street, I went with lowest price - best review combination on Tire Rack. These were the Sumitomo. I also got a wheel alignment, no big changes to meet P-specs. BTW, the wear on the Pzero tires was uniform across the tread, +/- 2/32 or so.
