Default 97 turbo - what would you do?

update on my 97 turbo now with 245K miles...won't pass CA smog as cylinder 2 misfires...i was told only way to 'fix' is rebuild...idles rough...but otherwise seems to run okay...burns 1 quart per 2500 miles. funny that the original clutch outlasted the engine.

my longtime wrench initially said $25K/4 weeks to rebuild...but now says costs could potentially touch $40K. have had car since 3K miles and cosmetics still great...love the way it drives....no brainer at $25K but $40K is pushing it.

what would you do?

1. open it up and 'see' what it needs?
2. look for another 'used' engine? any leads? want original stock.
3. scrap it...lots of other great cars out there on the cheap in this economy...575 maranello's/CL65/M5......not a big fan of the 997.
4. buy a black market 'registration tag' and drive it til it dies...

I'd call Todd Knighton of Protomotive to see what he can do. Hi price to rebuild a 993 twin plug to 510 HP is $32K and includes new turbos, Pauter rods, etc. It certainly wouldn't hurt.

does the $25-40k amount include substantial upgrades or is that just to stock specs? If the latter, seems awful pricey

I don't know, putting another 30-50k in a car with 245k miles might just not be worth it. I would probably tried to sell it for best offer and let some one else invest in it.

I would of thought you could find a used low mile motor for 15k to 20k.

Heads are soft from that many miles, $$$$$ to replace. Buy another motor.

I have no idea about the current prices / availability, but this thread seems to indicate it's still possible to buy a new engine with warranty from Porsche:

Over time aluminum can anneal from high heat applications.

For a pure street car, I am not certain how soft these heads would get in reality.

Get a replacement engine if you can do that for 30 or so. 40 for a rebuild seems like there must be a lot of padding in there.

rebuild top end, rebuild turbos and call it good. Pass smog. Drive.

I know... "while you are in there you should..." but it sounds like you can't justify the $$ to rebuild or purchase an engine. And I cannot argue with your logic. You got a lot of good miles out of this car.

I am with Chris on the head replacement. Not sure this car has seen the temp extremes that would require replacement... you got an insane # of miles out of the clutch so...
Reman heads from Porsche are about $1400 ea., last I checked.

I recently did mine and the cost was WELL under quotes I have seen... but labor = me (except machine work). WIth the miles on your car there will be various incidentals needing care but it should be far less than what you quoted...

Default Tag it out of state . . .

For $25K I am sure someone in NV will let you use their PO Box.
