Default Shop Manual

Hello, 4 days ago I purchased a 993. My first Porsche. I'm a DYI kind of guy and am looking for the best shop manual available. Recommendations appreciated. Thanks.

Original porsche shop manuals come up here from time to time, minimum $400 and they are gone within minutes. Pelican parts has them for $712.

There is a pdf copy of the shop manual floating around the internet but it's unclear how complete it is, aside from violating copyright, from what I understand the copy quality is so-so and electrical diagrams are poor.

Bentley manual is pretty good, best price I found was at ECS Tuning.

Pics of your new car please!!

I'm in the same boat as you -- new 993 about six weeks ago, first Porsche, DIY guy. I've been referring to pcarworkshop.com and Pelican Parts DIYs a lot, but just sprung for the Bentley manual yesterday. I'll let you know how it looks.

+1 on the Bentley book. While most of its content is available here and elsewhere on the Internet, the pictures and polish of the book make it worth the cost to me.

The wiring diagrams are icing on the cake.

I have found your site and love the DYI section. I'll get the Bentley manual so I have another reference. Thanks

Oh yeah, forgot about pcarworkshop, great resource, also the Pelican DIYs, and those on this forum which can be found using the search feature.

Not sure why but a lot of the DIYs on Rennlist under the "How-to's" on the Rennlist home page are WAY out to lunch. Consider this sage advice for us 993 owners:

"Antifreeze - Wait for your engine to cool, check your fluid level, and top off if necessary. If you check while your engine is warm, you can scald yourself when you open the reservoir cap. You likely will find the reservoir in the front of your car near the radiator."

You are also going to need the parts guides - they contain exploded diagrams of practically every part on your 993, with part numbers. Useful when ordering (and sometimes useful when you are doing the dissassembly/assembly). Its legal to have and is from Porsche.

http://www.porsche.com/usa/accessori...artscatalogue/

As for parts, Pelican is a good source for non-OEM parts, tools and accessories, but for factory parts, I only use Sunset Porsche - great prices (well, as good as it gets on these cars) and they are an official Porsche dealer.

Cheers,

Mike
