How do you know it's low mileage???

$5K is nothing in these cars to get them sorted. That's typical. Expect more in this case.

and just keep in mind the market for tiptronic trannies is much smaller. they are reliable etc but tend to fetch less than manual gearbox cars and fewer people want one...good luck....its always nice to see a neglected car rescued!!!

A well maintained 97 993 with Tip would probably bring between $45k to $50k. The fact that "actual" mileage on this car is unknown and that there are no maintenance records are huge obstacles. Lacking those could drop the value down to the $35k to $40k range and make it hard to find a buyer who knows anything about the costs to maintain a 993.

And, as pointed out above, these cars are expensive to work on if you can't do the work yourself. Removal and installation of the powertrain alone can cost upwards of $2k before any repair work can be initiated. An upper end refresh can set you back $10k. At 69k miles, if verifiable, you could be approaching the need for that upper end refresh as will as a clutch.

Bottom line is that $30k, in my opinion is more than a 993 is worth without verifiable mileage and repair history. If you can buy it at $20k, and handle the needed repairs yourself......then I would say you have a steal!

The cost to convert the car to a manual transmission would be in the neighbor hood of about $10k+. Not sure if that would increase the value of the car enough to recapture the cost. But, it would open up a wider market of potential buyers.

+1 everything he said.

Due to the unknowns with everything, expect to re-do the suspension, brakes, full engine and tranny service, tires... just to get it road worthy. Then, once all that is sorted out, you'll need to shift your attention to the interior = stereo, speakers, leather repair or replace, etc. $20k may be generous.

Good luck!

There is a white NB tip with similar miles but decent overall condition for $32k on San Antonio craigslist...

$30k is way too much for how big a question mark this particular car sounds to be...

Default diamond in the "rough"

Consensus- why open yourself to lengthy headaches and your wallet to such expensive unknowns, and have it suffer in eventual resale anyway?
Timing now is such that there are many terrific 993's available, in all flavors, and it's more of a buyer's market than in the recent past.
This bodes well for you.

A totally sorted out 993 with a GT2 hood and looking marvelous (high miles with a rebuild!) sold for mid 30's here. So, yeah you would be paying a massive premium on a 5th rate car.

FWIW, I just bought one that was in terrific shape and I'm still trying to figure out where $5k went this month.

At the risk of hijacking this thread (consensus: don't buy the car, seriously) how does one obtain a COA?

Only buy it if you plan to keep it and drive it. And hopefully you can do a lot of the needed work yourself. Pray there is no rodent/animal damage. Offer the person $15.....and be willing to come up to $20. Have cash in hand. See what she says. Good luck.

I would pass...too many "unknowns"...not actual mileage is also a big hit.

How come this vehicle is being compared to a narrow bodied car when is wb?

Just curious if nb vs. wb values matter less in this type of condition?
