I'm a novice with these things so would defer to the experts on the board. That said, I've recently gone through a nightmare with the transmission- tech heard a grinding/knocking noise when the car was on the lift and idling. Was coming from transmission case area. He initially thought it was going to be syncros and gears but after pulling everything apart has determined it was an input shaft bearing. I had personally not had any sense that anything was wrong while driving. Shifted like it always had. And I thought the sound was the light weight flywheel that was installed. Not sure if this knocking sound is consistent with what others would have heard but that's my experience.

Pardon my ignorance, but "Input shaft bearing?" Are you referring to the differential carrier bearings on either side of the transmission? Where the flanges bolt into the transmission?
