My understanding is that the gaskets shrink and leak, do the make aftermarket silicone gaskets? If yes has anyone here used them?

Andy,
After xx yrs of heat cycles, the gaskets become hard and lose their squeeze, and weep. I wouldn't go aftermarket on VC gaskets, unless you like repeating the job prematurely. JMHO

I recently had my gaskets replaced. My mechanic said there's nothing wrong with the original valve covers and there's no reason to spend big dollars to replace them.

993's (including turbos) had OEM plastic valve covers in MY 1995-98. Other than some odd leakage (which metal valve covers are also subject to) they hold up pretty well and are likely subject to a higher heat environment than an oil pan. There is admittedly little to no impact exposure that an oil pan would see. Mixed feelings on my part on this one

Just like any other gaskets in time.

Just replace them every ten years, or whenever needed.

On every car that I've ever had that had a leaking valve cover. a new valve cover rubber seal fixed the problem.
