Value of a used G50/21 (ROW) 993 6-speed transmission
Tried to search but couldn't find much...
I have an extra G50/21 (ROW) transmission out of my "RSR" and a friend of mine is interested in it.
Trying to figure out what is a fair price for the box? It was making a noise and we opened it up and found out the 3rd gear is missing a tooth. Otherwise everything looked good.
The box will be repaired with new original parts before selling.
What do you think a fair price would be? I don't want my friend to overpay and on the other hand don't want to realise later I sold it for way too cheap.

I'd lean towards selling it at steep discount as is and be done with it to your friend or someone else. That way they take responsibility for the repair. What if you repair it, he pays full market value, installs it and it's not right. He's not going to be happy. I know you are pretty handy and maybe it's not such a big deal to pull a tranny an extra time if you had to but for me, that would ruin my day!

that changes everything since they are so sought after. gone thru by a reputable shop with a clean bill of health? It's tough to put a price on one. I looked half heartedly about a year ago. They just aren't out there. I'd say 15k, gone thru and expected to last would not be unreasonable. 10k would have to be a very good friend.

Possibly Gert over at Carnewal has a clue for the going sale price levels of a mid-1990's RoW G50/21 gearbox. Just a thought.
My USA spec MY98 993 coupe had its original production gearbox swapped with a neu MY96 RoW G50/21 w/LSD back in the day, say year 1999/2000. The good folks at PAG's Zuffenhausen Werk 1 facility handled the swap amongst other TUV inspection items as the coupe was in country. The gearbox swap cost was stupid (cheap) money IIRC with the OE USA gearbox crated up for take-home; Wiesbaden, garage.
Fast forward sixteen - eighteen years, the PAG gears, syncro's, etc., parts & labor to facilitate a G50 gear ratio change has to be in excess of $10,000 USD.. No?

And here I was thinking about selling it for 5keur... Same happened with the hardback seats l listed for $800 back in '08. Thanks to Rennlist (actually I think it was my friend FlyingFinn here), I was informed of their market value and sold them a week later for at least 2-3x my initial asking price. Gotta love this place!
Back to the gearbox, for that kind of money I don't think it's the right box for what my friend intended it for. I will ask him of course first but if that is the case, what do you think my best plan would be if I wanted to sell it?
1. Continue with the repair (reputable race shop)
2. Document the condition with photos and a written report and close it as is (no repairs)
#1 I would be selling a functioning box with abt. 115k miles on it with new 3rd gearset and some other mandatory replacements. It would not be a completely refreshed box as we are not touching the bearings or changing the synchroes.
#2 It would be up to the buyer decide who does the repair and wether just replace the mandatory parts or do a complete refresh/rebuild.
I will get a quote for the parts needed for the repairs, I think it will be around 1.5k but won't know before I get the offer. The labour part is very small if just repaired.
The transmission has also the factory LSD but I think the plates are shot.

Data point for you: I sold a low miles 993 transmission on rennlist to an enthusiast. I was asking $3500 and he paid a bit less. That trans was the standard US transmission -- but it had all of its teeth. Maybe had 10K miles on it and none of them at the track.
Good luck.

Comparing to that, a box with better gearing and LSD would be worth a bit more but 15k sounds crazy.

I agree 15k sounds lofty, but,,,, that was my "gone thru" price. Not just changing out the broken gear, i.e. having one of the top shops go thru it. Take a look on ebay for used 993 transmissions. It's mind boggling. Most of them are close to 10k, that's either used or slightly more, rebuilt. And those are /20's. Admitedly those are asking prices, they may accept less than that, but I think the rl-er who got Mikes tranny did well. The alternative to /21 is to re-gear which has been well documented by many on rl, and it's going to be around 5 digits too. The upside is you get to pick the exact gears. The attraction of the /21 is it's oem, Porsche gears, no whine. I had a quick look, There is one /21 on ebay uk for sale at +/-$3500, parts only, broken case.

Singer has driven up the price of these boxes immensely. A core like yours is worth $5k or so. Properly rebuilt with the gear replaced and new synchros and sliders? You'll spend $4-5k just on the new parts. Rebuilding the LSD is another $1000. $10-12k rebuilt.
