Default alt/fan pulley, which way to get nut off

I'm having a heck of a time trying remove the nut that holds the pulley.

I want to make sure I am turning it the proper way.

If I set my ratchet to turn CCW (with 10mm TriSquare) and I try to turn the nut clockwise -- it doesn't move.

I tried to move it the other way around - but with less effort for fear of making it worse. no movement that way either.

Added a little WD40 to soak in, but no luck after sitting for a little bit.

Figured I'd ask before I do something wrong.

thx.

The nut has a right-hand thread so hold the 10 mm tri-square in place while turning the nut CCW.

^+1 Hold the triple square firm, turn the nut "righty tight, lefty loosey", like any standard nut.

WD40 is useless for this type of stuff. Use Kroil or Liquid Wrench penetrating oil.

in my experience, never use the triple square, you are going to strip the axle threads and it will haunt you
everytime you open the engine lid.

It takes two seconds to remove, this way:

first paragraph, second picture applies to you:

+1 of PB BLASTER...let soak for a couple hours.

If you don't go with eh screw driver method from geolab, use a very good quality triple square (porsche tool is useless).

I also used a snap-on triple square and tapped in gently to get it fully seated. I was able to use a socket extension fed through the latch hole at an able to be able to tap the triple square in.

I have replaced belts three times using both the Porsche tool and a similar socket tool having done it on both the original pully and the updated one. Never had problems removing the nut. How much force are people putting on this nut? I can see how the heads on the three cap screws holding the inner pully halfs together can get their heads gnarled up a bit so I keep spares on my tool kit.

PB blasted it overnight, didn't budge today.

Will hit it again tomorrow and let it sit for a few days...

The tri-square sets nicely, not an issue for stripping ... Save that for my 944 CV axle bolts!

Careful with the spray of the blaster if you care about the paint on your fan.

Try some heat on the nut with a torch, then soak it with the PB Blaster. The heat will draw the liquid in to help loosen it. Also if you're going to replace the belt just cut it off with cutters or a sharp knife.

Are you using the standard triple square Porsche tool? I had the same problem a few months ago, the standard Porsche tool didn't give me enough leverage to loosen, I bought a set of shallow triple square sockets on Amazon and used a breaker bar, came off right away.

I was actually able to find a 4 size pack of triple square bits at O'Reilly's auto parts and also recently seen them on Auto Zone's tool shelf. The ones from O'Reilly's were $6 and too long. I had a guy at work in the metal shop cut about an inch off the correct one with a grinder. Perfect inexpensive option. Also be sure you are wearing your gloves. I took mine off for a better "feel" handling the bit. It's easy to drop the bit into the bottom of the engine bay where it can be a challenge to get back! Forgot to put them back on, when this sucker breaks loose you very well may end up taking a big chunk out of the outside edge of your pinky finger at the knuckle closest your fingernail. Ouch!!! took months to heal...

The first time I ever removed that nut on my car. I stacked wrenches and put all my weight on them.

After that struggle, I make sure to use blue Loctite and I tighten it up nice and tight, but don't go to town on it like the prior person who installed it.

I'm just browsing the 993 section.
What is the "triple square" thing about? I have never heard of this.

Triple square (12 point) bit used to hold the alternator shaft stationary while you remove the nut.

The Porsche tool

is ok if you use a hollow stainless bar to extend

This is by far the best 24mm wrench you can get
