Weird 993 C2 manual clutch problem...
I was maneuvering my 993 in a garage back and forth and suddenly as the clutch pedal was half-way depressed I heard a popping sound from the clutch pedal... Immediately the clutch pedal required almost double the effort and it seemed to lose it's bottom "grab / bite"...
I carefully drove the car home... It shifted normally, but each time I depress the clutch there is some clunking sound like something is grinding... Any ideas what could have gone bad ?
I am planning to take the car to my mechanic... I am just curious if the same thing has happened to anyone on this board... Thanks !

Pop off the pedal plate and check the clutch bushing and assembly. My clutch pedal still hangs a bit in cold weather but comes back eventually. The pedal assembly has many points that can cause your symptoms.

Is the clunking / grinding sound coming from the pedal cluster or from the gearbox itself? Does it still shift fine aside from having a difficult to press pedal?
If from the pedal cluster, I'd remove the wooden board and take some pics. Many of us have been down there for various reasons and could help diagnose.

Thanks for your quick replies...
No the grinding is only from the pedal assembly...
I seems like something broke or was dislocated on the pedal assembly...
Once I remove the cover I will take pictures...

Mine does this every year in the fall when the weather turns cold in the fall...Started it yesterday after three mornings in the the high 20's...A liberal dose of aerosol lithium grease on the pivot points cures the problem for another year...May not be your problem but it works for me.

The pop could be transferred through the hydraulic system to the pedal. It happened to me after I replaced my clutch. The slave cylinder pin would slip on the throw out bearing release fork. I had to spray some white lithium grease on the fork. If it's not in the pedal assembly, lube that baby up.

It sounds as though either the clutch fork or throwout bearing have lost an ear , if it doesn't
clear up miraculously I'd say be prepared to have the transmission pulled to examine the problem..
I seriously doubt the pedal cluster would create the scinario you have described .
Just my opinion but others may have additional input , Bert

I removed the pedal cover today and spotted the problem...
Apparently the clutch pedal has a clutch return spring that is connected to the pedal by a white lever... This white lever seemed to be broken and was restricting the free clutch movement... Furthermore this explains why the clutch pedal all of a sudden became harder and required double the effort to depress...
The funny thing is that now it fully returns back to its position when not depressed (no hanging-clutch problem now..)
If you see the picture you my kinematic clutch lever seems to be the golden one, so I guess I have to switch it to the olive one...
Any ideas what the broken white part number is ??? I want to order it together with the updated olive kinematic clutch lever and take it to my mechanic...
Thanks !!

Based on pictures on pcar.com http://www.pcarworkshop.com/index.ph...inematic_Lever it looks like it's the clutch servo spring tension holder. Per the PET, PN 965 423 143 00. $62.25 at pelican.

I realize the OP solved his problem but for what it's worth, this time the lithium grease had no effect on the grinding noise in my clutch pedal. Instead, it quickly became a loud snapping noise each time the clutch pedal was released. Turned out to be severe wear on the kinematic lever and the pivot pin holding it in place. I suppose that the fact that it happened at the onset of cold weather was just coincidental.
