Default Weird whistling noise

Hi fellow Rennlist members.

My 1995 C2 has developed an interesting intermittent whistle. I love my car but the noise that ocurs 50% of the time is really bugging me. I recorded the sound and uploaded on YouTube:

http://youtu.be/GFnyAoXjU1w

I really appreciate all the help and advice members have given me. If any one has an opinion about the what it is, I would love to know.
Thanks for your time.

Mike

Check the fan belt sensor. When the small bearing starts to fail it often sounds like a whistle.

Default Weird whistling noise

When mine made this sound it was my fan hub bearing.

It's intermittent - would a failed bearing not create more of a consistent whining noise?

Surprisingly no. However it could also be a vacuum leak or alternator/fan hub/or dizzy bearing. Or a million other things.

I would take a plastic tube or hose and use it like a stethoscope to localize the sound. It should be easy to do. Also a slight wistling sound from the alternator in many cases is normal especially at idle.

All GREAT advice above! Only to add, best way to check the fan belt sensor is to tie it back with a zip tie so its not rolling on the belt to fully isolate it.

Does noise volume/frequency go up with RPM?
Is it only when the engine is on? Only ask since the CCU fan (climate control unit in the dash) can make a higher pitched whirring noise. Actually, this fan can continue to run when the car is off for some time...then you'd hear it in the center of the dash with the engine off.
