Default Cooling Fan Problem

I removed the bumper to get ready to install the euro bumper.

I found the drivers side cooling fan blocked from spinning with what looks like ducked tape but it's looks like it came from the fan motor itself, it was stuffed inside the fan. I pulled it out so the fan spins but you can hear the squeaking bearing so I'm going to change both motors.

My questions is has anyone else ever seen this?

Also my interior fan motor would blow a fuse intermittently....I wonder if this is in any way related. The cooling fan was blocked by the tape and would not turn.

My guess is that was a hack mechanics fix for a squeaky fan motor.

I think this is the first documented case of duct tape stuffed into a 993 A/C fan.

It looks like duct tape but it's not. I think it came from the fan motor housing.

I'm also wondering because that motor was locked up if it effected the speeds on my interior fan I'm experiencing now.

the ac fan housing has some foam tape on it to seal against the condenser . over time it will crumble just like on the oil cooler and your vents on the interior. as some of you know, once in a while a chunk will blow out the interior vents...

any ways, I think this is someone fix to make the seal again and over time it came loose and got caught in the fan.

Where exactly is the foam tape that blows pieces out of the vents?

dutchcrunch, there is no air ventilation connection between the condenser and oil cooler fan assemblies and the cabin. If you experience foam parts coming out of the interior vents, it probably comes from the air flow flap seals. The flaps have a thin foam strip glued to the edge to properly shut the air flows, and these deteriorate over time.

Tore

Default foam

toreb, what I meant is there are foam seals on ac condenser to fan. oil cooler to fan and interior vents on dash that snap into the ducting. all car manufactures use this stuff black 1/4 inch wide ect.. open cell foam like the engine sound pad.... with age and heat the stuff pulverizes. that's what I meant. dude you trying to make look like a dummy just kidding.

I recently replaced this foam on my oil cooler side. Make sure the replacement you use will withstand the maximum temperature that the oil cooler will experience (not the stuff you find at Home Depot). Also, you want to use closed cell foam as open cell foam will trap water/moisture.

I had more time now to look at this....the tape is the cooling fins on the Evaporator coil coming apart. So the radiator itself was solid the fins in the center on the right side were all loose. One whole core came out and jammed my fan from turning. I ordered a new coil and fan motor. With the bumper off it's easy to get to the resisters to change them.

I suggest to everyone the next time your under your car you check and make sure both fans spin freely. The drivers side has the a/c coil and the passengers side has the engine oil cooler. I found the engine oil cooler both lines were weeping....I'll replace the O-rings.

Default A/C Cooling Fan and Coil

I finally had time to remove the A/C fan. The coils or the fin part had come apart jamming the fan. I installed a new Motor-shroud-coil. While I was there I replaced the drier.

I also found the shroud broken on the oil cooler fan and replaced that. When the shrouds crack the fans touch the shrouds....I would check that on everyone's car. I noticed the new shrouds are made stronger with webbing molded in.

^^ That is crazy! I was looking at both of the fan shrouds up front not long ago (bumper cover off) and they both appeared okay. This can't be too common - I hope.

In case anyone was wondering....the front end was never hit. I had the bumper off installing the Euro one and other work.

The car has 180k on it
