You can make the newer (-01) holder work with a 95 wheel - this is what I did when I replaced my wheel - but only if you have a post-95 air bag. A 95 air bag definitely will not work with the -01 holder.

Not from the factory. Mine does only because I replaced the steering wheel on my 97 with a wheel from a 95. When I did this I kept my 97 airbag and replaced the -01 air bag holder which had caused my horn to honk on hard breaking. I suspect that the setup that I have (95 wheel with 96+ holder and airbag) is pretty unusual.

I was thinking of just replacing the grommets on my existing frame. I see ZIMS sells them but lists them as fitting '94 or '95 cars.
Do you think the same grommets are used on a '96?

George, it's a direct fit for my 95 cab and works great. I was surprised all the rubber grommets were near perfect condition, for a 20 years old part. I put on a layer of silicone paste to prevent them from drying and crack.
Thx again for your geneous offer.

Note that the grommets are glued pretty securely into the AB holder. I was fiddling with my old holder this morning and tried loosening the glue with acetone but that didn't work. Probably some careful scraping would be required to remove the old grommet. Also, the OEM grommets have a metal insert that the mounting bolt goes through. Based on the picture on the Zims website these would need to be removed from the old grommets and installed on the new grommets.
At $50.00 per set the replacement grommets aren't cheap, but better than having to replace the air bag.

Warning, ghetto-fix alert:
Fold some light cardboard or stiff paper up into a small right angle, and lodge it in the gaps between the horn pad and wheel (yes, make sure that it's not visible ). It acts like a "spring" to keep the pad from actuating the horn. I did this who knows how long ago, maybe 6+ years now, and it's flawless ...not to mention easy, quick, and free! ...just sayin

Hints on how to install Zims grommets
I replaced the grommets in my 1995 993 airbag holder about a month ago. It was not easy. As bjornebo mentioned, the original rubber grommets are in a metal insert that is glued into the metal airbag holder. The Zims grommets don't require metal insert and are press fit into the airbag holder after you remove the metal inserts. To remove the inserts, I scraped as much of the old rubber out of the inserts and then worked on one corner of the holder at a time. I heated each corner over a gas stove burner until the middle of the airbag holder felt hot. I then quenched corner holding the insert in cold water. This broke glue bond around the inserts and well as cooled off the metal so I could use a single-edged razor blade to lift the lip of the insert a little bit so I could fit a small screwdriver under the lip to pry the insert completely out. The Zims grommets are very difficult to press into the airbag holder even after removing the inserts. To make the job a bit easier, I boiled some water then dropped the grommets into the water (one at a time) for 10-20 seconds after I turned off the flame. This softened the grommets enough for me to press fit them into the airbag holder. So far the new grommets have worked fine - no more random honking on turns or during braking! I can post a picture or two if people think that will help.

Ok, here are the pictures. The first one shows how to lift the edge of the insert with a single-edged razor blade. Note unless you like the smell of burning rubber, you should remove as much of the rubber grommet from the insert before you heat that corner over a gas stove burner. Note also that a new Zims grommet has already been installed in the upper grommet hole. The second picture shows 3 of the 4 inserts removed. The last picture shows the re-installation of the airbag holder in the steering wheel. Remember to insert the horn holding bolts from behind, through the airbag holder at this stage of the reassembly, before everything is covered by the horn. I hope this helps.
