Triptonic goes well with some gin like Hendricks on a warm summer afternoon. I highly recommend it
In all seriousness, Tips are fine. There are a few ladies I see daily driving their 993s in the L.A. area and they look like they're having a good time

I drove a 1995 993 tip and was disappointed...but then I found an owners manual and I had never taken the time to read what Porsche says about the tip and how to get the most out of it. Putting in manual and selecting 3 (third gear) turns the preconceived world upside down. The transmission and throttle maps become adaptive to the drivers style and they are much more aggressive. With the addition of the buttons on the steering wheel it becomes even easier to use the gearbox.
I have just spend my first month in a 997 with tip (pre-pdk) and the more modern throttle and trans mapping makes it even more exciting. I leave it in Auto mode but can instantly throw it into manual by just using the steering wheel buttons. Driving very aggressively the trans stays in the manual mode even though the shifter is still in auto. Take the revs out with a deep foot and then standing on the brakes, the trans down shifted almost like a PDK, including dropping down into first when it felt I needed that gear and power.
The great thing about the tip is that is has 25+ years of development and they are easy to get serviced. I've talked to several PCA 993 tip owners and everyone of them praised it.
What I read about in the 993 tip becomes even more aggressive in the later versions. The key is to read what Porsche say about how to get the most out of it.

Indeed, JI. Many claim the tip is sluggish. That is true if you leave it in M mode. But, once you study how it reacts to to various programs, this is FAR from true. My '03 tip has 250 programs. The earlier tips had many fewer programs.

If you want 'amazing it was produced in 1989', the Nissan Skyline GTR is what you're looking for. It was 959 sophisticated but it was produced on a huge scale. Even today it's an impressive car. Now, back to Porsche 4 speed autos. I like how the torque converter locks and makes it feel like it's a 5 speed.

I fully agree on the GTR and I would assume that there are other similar technical achievements that are amazing even by today's standards.
I was thinking more broadly though - I can't help but think that when Porsche introduced the Tiptronic in 1989 we had a revolution in my country...
