Default Are my engine mounts shot ??

As I mentioned in another thread, my gearbox feels notchy and I was advised to check the engine mounts. Should there be that much sag ?

Opinions ?

I think so. My muffler tips looked like yours before and the genre change was like if I was bumped in the back. I used Wevo black and really satisfied. I bought them from pelican because I never got an answer back when emailed and called Wevo.

They are relatively inexpensive, relatively easy to change and they can make a big difference.

Are failed mounts more a function of vehicle usage or simply time/age?

OP...those are worn out for sure. Logic dictates that unless you are driving your car very hard, they most likely fail because of time and age. If they are also original, then it becomes even less of a mystery. They are surprisingly easy to change DIY, well worth it, and I bet you will notice a difference in the shift. I have not done the "golden-rod" yet, but this is on my short list. (perhaps can also affect the feel of the shift... With a bit of research you can find some good explanations of both of these DIY's

PCARWorkshop is a great site to start your search.

Does anyone have an 'AFTER' picture (mounted) of what they should look like ? How much space should there be between the plastic and metal ?

I just installed them and I have the feeling I'M on the other extremity... My mufflers were installed before, when the ENGINE mounts were shot.

Mine looked like these when they came out. The passenger-side mount is on the left.

Exhaust tip position is not a reliable indicator of engine mount health IMO, as tips have considerable adjustment when the band clamps are loosened.

However, exhaust tip movement is a good indicator: simply slide a floor jack under the engine case seam and start to lift the car. If the tips move upwards prior to the chassis ( or the gap of tip to bumper cover cutout closes), time for new mounts.

^^^^^^^^ and if you suspect they're shot, open engine lid first, so you don't stress any of the engine lid when it is jacked up.
