Another thing to check are electrical ground points to make sure they are free of corrosion, clean and tight, main ones being under the drivers seat and in the engine compartment in area of coilover mounts.

Car just came back from the shop, Guru says 100% my clutch is the culprit. 65k miles, seems right but I'm still dubious because the hill test didn't exacerbate the abnormal behavior. I tried another check by idling the car, putting on the parking brake and foot brake, placing the car in third gear, and seeing if the car would a) stall or b) rev because the clutch was slipping. The car revved without any serious effort.
So, looks like it's time for a new clutch . Single mass flywheel and lightweight clutch will be happening this fall.
I appreciate all the helpful advice from the forum members, I learned a lot through this process.
