Interesting and thanks for sharing. I am told the Targa is built on the Cabriolet frame and I see the Cabs could go 18". I did notice the bracket was there for the steering rack as that was replaced also. I can attest that 18s ride just fine so I am not sure if this is an issue. But perhaps the 18s are worth some money and one could find some 17s?

I like Geolab's interpretation of those TSBs and personally think that the theory that 18s will damage a Targa is hogwash. I know little about wheel approval, but the alternate theories don't seem to hold water IMHO.

Also, the related theory (that comes up every now and then) that Porsche somehow added weight to the wheels to protect the roof is a conspiracy started by foreign government agents.

Porsche 993 Targa
The Targa version of the 993 was introduced in model year 1996 and saw the debut of a retractable glass roof, a design continued on the 996 and 997 Targa. The glass roof would retract underneath the rear window revealing a large opening. A shade was there to help prevent the greenhouse effect of the closed roof. This system was a complete redesign, as previous Targa models had a removable roof section and a wide B-pillar functioning as a roll bar. The new glass roof design allowed the 993 Targa to retain the same side-on profile as the other 911 Carrera variants and finished with the inconvenience of storing the removed top of the old system. The Targa has the body of the convertible with the Targa glass roof replacing the fabric roof.

The Targa was equipped with distinctive 2-piece 17-inch (430 mm) wheels, which could be ordered as an option on all cars not having standard 18-inch (460 mm) wheels. Problems with the Targa include heat in the cabin, creaking noises on rough roads and a very complicated and unreliable mechanism.

I too doubt that 18's would do any damage, my point was that I doubt that the factory would build a Targa with 18's if they specifically say that they are not recommended on that model.

I ran 18's and RUF 19's for years - including track work - with zero issues. That included at the time PSS-9's, even at full stiff at times. The TSB is the usual cover-your-butt Porsche notice.

Replaced the stone guards, gasket parts, and 2 stage polish and wax with my local paint shop. The paint is in decent condition and can last for many years. There does appear to have been some paint work in the past. If someone wants a perfect paint job, a complete respray by a qualified shop would be a good idea.

So I did not sell the Targa. Since I have a unique vehicle with a cool story, I decided to take the leap and completely repaint with the same Midnight Blue.
