Default Looking at a 993 w/ Tiptronic S

What does the S stand for? More programs in the system? Do these match revs on downshifts? It is a 1997 MY.

I had a 2001 Audi A4 with tip andthumb buttons. When I would downshift I would blip the throttle and this would sometimes bring the revs up so there was not the sudden dive and protest as the engine was pulled up to the correct rpm.

Also...will tip automatically engage when I hit the buttons in the same way that pdk or dsg does?

Tiptronic S indicates it has the switches on the steering wheel. Yes you can blip the throttle as you change down a gear. Takes a bit of practice, but worth the effort to learn.

The Tip has to be manual for driver gear selection.

I really enjoyed my Tip before selling it last year, the fact that you can keep both hands on the wheel and simultaneously rev match a lower gear is loads of fun...a completely different experience from a manual car (not better or worse, just different).

All 1995-1998 993's that are Tiptronic are "Tiptronic S" but don't be fooled, this is the same automatic 4 speed transmssion as 964 cars only with different module programming and buttons on the wheel.

And blipping the throttle as you hit the switch to drop a gear, are you trying to catch the transmission in transition? Is this a constant or moving target?
Is it abusive of the torque converters and various clutches inside the transmission?

Yes, catching the transmission in transition. It is constant once you figure out the timing of the blip and change.

The tiptronic gearbox has a reputation of been very robust. Like most of the car, change the filters and oil.

I don't believe you actually can do this with a Tip. I've owned mine for almost 17 years and can't do that........at least not without putting unnecessary stress on the transmission.

David993, I think a few owners will disagree with you. Good description here. Also left foot braking is a plus. #13 https://rennlist.com/forums/993-foru...the-story.html

Well I drove a Tip and I was disappointed...in the Tip. It was very nice to be behind the wheel of a 993 again. The car is agile and responsive...much more pleasant to drive compared to my 996. I recall the tv show where the 996 was compared to the 964...and my 996 does remind me of my 964 RS America. Even with almost 50 hp power advantage for the 996 over the 993, even though the 996 is lighter than the 993, the shorter wheelbasae of the 993 and the lighter steering feel of the 993 (not to mention the lines) made the 993 a more enjoyable drive...for me.

At the same time, finding (or creating) a 993 in the same condition level as my 03 996 means I'd be looking at an easy $15000 bump in the average prices, not to mention the money I'd lose selling my 996. So for now a 993 will be a watch and wait project. I expect I'll go for a high milage example with very good mechanical condition over low miles and cosmetics...plus I'll wait for a little air to come out of the prices because global economics are just a single Black Swan from a major pull back. And when people have to raise cash to cover their short positions, car prices (and 993 prices) will become more realistic.

things of true value are not going to become cheap because of a Black Swan.

Hey John, Why the disappointment in the Tip? I've hade mine for five years, and have never regretted going Auto, vs. Manual.

I know the different strokes thing applies, and some guys won't consider an auto over a six speed... But am interested in hearing logical responses as to why?

Thanks,

Rob

Hi Raab...
Part of it was that the Tip (in the early 993 I drove) is a four speed vs a manual six speed...and I just couldn't get the rpms I wanted at certain speeds. I actually found it more comfortable in full auto mode than in manual mode. I also tried blipping the throttle when manual down shifting but I still got that auto trans "dive/lurch" as opposed to matching the revs in a manual or PDK transmission. In a city stop and go traffic world I might have been more content. I really wanted it to work and I'm sorry it didn't.

I was really hopeful that prices would flatten or come down for about 3 years now, but I've finally resigned myself to the possibility that they might not. Good thing though because it probably gave me the courage to pull the trigger.
