Default Let the engine temperature hot prior to oil change?

Is it necessary to run the engine hot prior to oil change?
Is Mobil 1 10-40 high mileage synthetic recommended?
Do I need to remove the DME and how many cranks?
Location on the dme
Thanks

Lots of info on this around. Do it hot if possible, but be prepared, lots of oil comes out and its easy to get burnt.

Oil type is very controversial, do a search, hundreds of threads. Focus on Brad Penn, Motul, Mobil V-twin.

Remove DME to load filters with oil, etc -> it takes exactly 47.6 cranks.

Just kidding, crank in 10 second bursts until you get oil pressure over 1-2 bar after a 8 liter fill. Then top it up, measuring the oil level when the engine if fully warm.

DME relay is in the front trunk fuse box, right hand side of the car, near the cowl.

Again, ALL of this info is here already - and MORE. Dig in, search and read! Do some of your own legwork, its fun!

Cheers,

Mike

I get mine warm. More important to me than getting a specific temp is getting as many particles as possible in suspension before draining.

I am torn on this. You figure when cold all the oil is at the bottom of the pan. When warm the oil has to all drain down from the top. I have done my other vehicles cold.

Yessir,..that's correct. Its a high ZDDP product formulated for air-cooled engines.

The hotter the oil is, the more contaminants you remove from the system and thats the whole purpose of the oil change in the first place.

Is Mobil 1 10-40 high mileage synthetic recommended?
Not in my opinion. It lacks sufficient low-temp viscosity (unless its below freezing) as well as ZDDP to protect these engines.

Do I need to remove the DME relay and how many cranks?
Thanks
Not at all. Just refill the tank with 9 quarts and fire it up to start warming the oil. Once its hot, you can accurately read the dipstick and add a little more as needed.

Welcome to 2015. Oils have changed significantly due to totally different engines and environmental regulations. 5w40 is just viscosity - there is a lot more to oil than that.

No oil pan on a 993. The oil you drain will come mostly from the oil tank. with some coming from the bottom of the case.

If you're stuck (read: happy) on Shell and 5w40, I run Shell Rotella T6. It is a 5w40 weight with 1275 ZDDP level.

if 5w40 is just viscosity and Porsche recommended it then, so today it remains recommended!!

The oil brand and the "other" things you mention changed since then; here we must choose wisely because we have an old engine.
But viscosity remains unchanged! 5w40 is the best.

Porsche recently released their own branded oil for the 993 that is 10w-60, I think. 5w-40 isn't the end all be all necessary weight. How you drive the car, the temperatures where you live, how worn engine internals are, etc determine which weight you select.
