AC Belt Size Question
I am in the process of swapping out the belts on my 993. I got the alternator and fan belts taken care of, but the AC belt that Pelican sent me seems to be too short. With it in place, I can't get the compressor to line up with the slots for the bolts.
The belt that I removed was size 13x1090. The new one is 13x1085. Is it common for these cars to sometimes use different sized belts?
I called Pelican and they had never heard of this, nor did they have a 1090 in stock. I assume that I can find it from the local auto store.

The belt I have on my 1995 C2 is Porsche part # 999 192 363 50 (ContiTech AVX13 X 1085 LA). This is the correct size for my model/year.
The belt is a tight fit. It may be necessary to remove the compressor mounting bolts, fit the belt to the crankshaft pulley, then rotate the compressor clockwise (viewed from above), tip it inward, get the belt onto the compressor pulley, and rotate it back into position so the mounting bolts can be fitted.
When choosing new belts, I always go for the Porsche branded ones. Correct fit is not just a matter of width, length, and pitch, but also of flexibility of the belts. There are some threads on this forum telling of strange misfire codes and the long, expensive chase to solve the problem, when all along it was an incorrect belt.

Make sure you loosen the sliding bracket bolt underneath... This allows the whole thing to slide to the left. As BobbyT says, however, its just really tight. Someone cheated on yours and got the 1090 belt before. Its a bit of wiggling the first time or two, but you'll figure it out. Get 3 or 4 of the top bolts in and then re-tighten the sliding bracket bolt (its a goofy apparatus).

I had to remove 3 of the bolts and completely rotate the compressor to get the old belt off. With the new belt on, the compressor is not coming even close to lining up with the bolt holes.

I use Pelican aftermarket belts, the AC belt is always a pain, I have to unbolt the compressor to get it on and I seem to recall a little levering trick with a wooden stick to get the bolt holes to initially line up.

When I replaced my AC compressor, I bought a new belt in the 1085 size from Pelican (old one was 1090). I struggled for hours to get it on and tried the Rennlist tricks, but I eventually succumbed and installed a new 1090 belt...
Just my $0.02, but there was no problem getting proper tension with 1090, so I feel ok using it.

Getting the 1085 belt is a nightmare, with a lot of straining an levering to get the last bolt in. There is adjustment in the system for a longer belt. I have the 1085 on the car now, and a 1100 on the shelf. http://www.autohausaz.com/search/pro...FdgMgQodY78A2w

I tried again last night, and there was absolutely no way the 1085 was going to fit.
I ended up buying a belt at the local auto store that seems to work. A 1/2" wide belt is the exact same width as a 13mm belt, and the V shape seems to be the same also. I got a 43", which works out to 1092mm. That put the compressor close to the middle of the adjustment on my car. I have not driven it yet, but it seems to work correctly with the engine running and AC on in my garage.

Retract my 13x1090 belt comment
I went back to my notes, and realized I misspoke in my earlier post.
When I worked on my AC compressor, I did not install a new 13x1090 belt, but instead installed the old belt again which was 13x1085 (gasp! ;-)).
I'm going to try to make amends by posting some useful photos and show why I think the old belt fit and the new one wouldn’t despite being the same size.
The belt originally on my car is an Optibelt Marathon 2, PORSCHE 999.192.363.50.
The belt I ordered from Pelican is a Contitech 999-192-363-50-M21. Both are size AVX13x1085La. However, if you look at them, the teeth are quite different. I am guessing that this made the difference in how the belt fit the pulleys.

The AC pulley is a bit different than the others though, so I could be wrong.

I just purchased a Dayton #17435, metric size 13A1105. I should give about 1/2 greater stretch to clear the A/C pulley potentially eliminating the need to unbolt the compressor to change the belt. Here is the comparison:

I used a Contitech 13x1100 LA a couple of years ago and the fit was perfect. I have not had to adjust the tension in that time and there is plenty of scope to make adjustment if required.
The compressor bolts will still need pulling to fit.
There was a discussion going on about it https://rennlist.com/forums/993-foru...ator-belt.html
