Buying used 993 salvage title
#16
Not all salvages are equal; theft, flood, collision all have different ramifications and value. All cars sell at the right price; salvage, daily drivers and garage queens. The issue is when a seller tries to sell a salvage car at 10-20% below the cost of a non salvaged car; it just won't fly. I'd agree with those that say 35% discount as a starting point and then a sliding scale up or down depending on what an inspection finds.

Here is the link of the add, although it looks like a dealer, it s their mechanic personal car. He was willing to sell in the high thirties http://www.kijiji.ca/v-autos-camions...ationFlag=true

Also consider that it's in the Montreal area and it's a C4. There's a good chance it's been winter driven.
In Canada it's kind of a known thing to be extremely wary of any car from Quebec/Montreal because of corrosion issues related to the de-icing solution used on the roads there.

as all of us know, salvage titles are issued when repairs exceed X% of the cars value at the time.
quick litmus for me... is that if the major accident occurred when the car was almost new (high value).. like in this case... 1996 model, accident in 1998... the repair bill must have been massive.... and the damage must have been significant.
this is not a good sign.
its one thing if an longhood was salvaged in the 1980s.... when the value was nothing and any damage would have been a meaningful % of bluebook at the time...
my 2 cents

Salvage titles can come up from a stolen recovery car, an owner dispute that has beeen settled in court , a damage accident where the insurance company has sold the wreck or a car that has some other damage that caused a total loss on a title claim such as submersion in water. So you will want to know why salvage title was issued before you buy the car. Ultimately it will need a state inspection to convert it back to a regular title.

I'm having a little trouble figuring out from the picture, but it looks like the damage is to the bottom-front of the tub. Their fix doesn't look very pretty. I also don't recognize that bracket.
All that being said...
You've got a point there.

At 40-50% discount to non-salvage, if inspection checks out (salvage not due to flood), I'd buy in a heartbeat. Then drive it till the wheels fell off, which for a properly maintained 993 will mean another 10-20 years. Afterwards, who cares about future sale price?
For those of us who already owns one, it's hard to relate to the desire of those who're still looking but are being shut out by the price of entry...

For us "southerners", does anyone know what the requirements are for (or even possibility of) importing a car with a salvage title to the US?
Sports Seats are a definite plus ... especially if they're heated (edit: they are heated)

Hi everyone, looking to get myself a 993, found a 96 C4 coupe manual with 48k miles. The car has a salvage title in PA dating from 98. Car is now in Canada Looked at the car and label is on the front hood, both door jams and engine area. I don t really see any major repairs on it...
The only thing is rough spots on each side of spare tires. Current owner had it for 10 years and bought it from a Porsche dealer. Could get the car for 38k$. Is this a good deal considering the history?

$38k would be good for a high miles but needs nothing car...but not for a salvage job.

I'm not quite sure if you are trolling but if we are 'Typical Porsche Guys' then what does that make you ?
Thanks and have a nice weekend.
