Default LSD rebuild options and cost

I did a quick search and threads appear to be quite old. My clutch will need replacement soon. My car is 4S so LSD should be standard. Couple questions:
1) Should I have my LSD rebuilt if the tranny is coming out for new clutch?
2) What's the cost for LSD rebuild?
3) What are rebuild options? OEM? Guards? Other? Impact on cost?
4) Is there way to confirm worn LSD? When I spin one rear wheel (wheels off the ground) the other rotates in the opposite rotation suggesting worn LSD, but I'm not sure if that's a right way to confirm.

Thanks in advance
Yury

The guy who opens up your transmission can probably evaluate it for you.

Maybe.

You might want to post the shop that you are considering to have the work done at…there are a fair number of Rennlisters in your area and they could advise where you might want to have this work done. Rebuilding it correctly is not the same as changing oil.

How many miles on the car?

If I was going to rebuild the LSD I would go with a four plate (each side) setup using either Guard or Porsche Motorsport parts. You can call Guards directly and ask for a estimate. I am sure Steve at Rennsport would also be willing to spend a few minutes and go over some options with you.

In any case you should also be prepared for the "once you are in there" finding some other items to address on the transmission itself.

Sounds like you have a worn out LSD. Call Matt at Guard and ask him for his opinion. Who's doing the work on your car?

I did that job in my turbo. See below videos of my car showing that.

I got the LSD rebuild kit from California Motorsport (talked with Roger Brown) and the kit was arround $1082 but I also ordered new seal, o'ring cover, bearings and cap bearings which was about $120-140 aditional.

Labor cost I don't have idea for your area as I did it in my shop. You don't have to take off the trans to do it, just left halshaft and take off the cover of the transaxle.

Don't go with OEM probably 3 times expensier and it's known to be a poor LSD (not only about the lock up, but also longevity since it has few discs only). The new one should have between 60 and 80 lbft of breakaway.

I'm at 78k miles with original clutch. I'm hoping it will be another year or two before new clutch, but I want to gather some info.

I'm not looking to do tranny rebuild. If LSD replacement is easy and not much extra cost I would do it. If not, I can live with worn LSD until tranny needs more work.

The car is mostly street driven with a couple of DEs per year.

Thanks Diego, that's exactly what I did so my LSD must be worn.

Yury -- If you're some what of a DIY'er, it is actually not that hard to take the diff out. Do a few searches for procedure.

That's what I had trouble finding, will try again.
From above, in this thread, it seems that tranny can stay in, so no need to coincide LSD rebuild with clutch replacement.

I don't drive hard enough to notice if LSD is worn. I only tried the test in Diego's video, but from what I read that doesn't always mean that LSD is shot. It still may be working under a load.

Yury, once you put a working LSD in the car you will notice a clear difference, especially under hard braking. Corner exit is also significantly improved.

And no, you don't have to have the transmission out of the car in order to remove the diff. It comes out from the side, you need to unbolt the driver side rear axle to get access to it.

Thanks, Ilko. Only if I had a proper heated garage....

Yeah, you would need more than a parking space to tackle that job...

there is definitely a way, not sure about the "will" part.
Onto to do list for now.
