Exclamation EMERGENCY! SHEARED WHEEL STUD! Need Help in Oklahoma City

Hi Rennlist!

My buddy went to pick up his 993 this weekend in East coast to drive to California. He is driving across the continent. I just got a call from him and he said a wheel stud sheared off and some lug nuts flew off. Only two lug nuts is on, one is stuck on there. The rim cut the tires. Some damage to the right rocker but oil line seems to be fine he said.
He is about 100 miles west of Oklahoma City, about 2/3 of the ways to Amarillo.
He is safe off the road, but he'll need to tow it to a shop asap.
I need a shop recommendation near there that can get him back on the road ASAP.
Anyone got any suggestion.

Please and thank you!!!

Vince-- Caveat: I'm not local, & it's been years since I lived in TX.

'Til you hear from a RLer familiar with the area, consider contacting the Llano Estacado PCA Region (centered on Amarillo, TX).

FWIW, the only related service shops I noticed on the W. TX PCA Region's website are south of Amarillo in Lubbock, which may be too far away.

Hopefully helping your friend's road to recovery. Good luck!

Thanks Jäger! Will definitely get in contact with fellow PCA members of that region .

Lubbock might actually be closer than Oklahoma city him so I'll let him know!

Thanks again

Update:

He got it towed to a safe place for the night. Will have to decide in the morning whether to head to Amarillo or back to Oklahoma city. Anybody have any experience with Aardvark (Amarillo ) or Dumont (Oklahoma City) ? Or maybe even some recommendation of a generic shop around there that might be able to get him some new studs and lugs and tires quick.
thanks guys

I'd be calling the seller on the East coast and having a conversation about selling a vehicle in unroadworthy condition. Probably wouldn't achieve much, but sounds like an odd situation. I'm glad everyone is safe, could have been really ugly if a wheel flew off at speed.

Howdy all, I'm the guy whose Porsche decided to try and ditch a wheel while in motion. So far, one nut is seized on there but I don't believe anything's particularly bent. We'll see what we can discover this morning. Just my luck to break down exactly halfway between any major cities to the East and West, though it must be said that the failure happened in a pretty controlled and safe manner. No cars around me, was going ~60mph in a straight line, and damage seems to be localized to the tire, rocker panels, and possibly wheel hub assembly. I've got my fingers crossed that we can just get a new tire mounted at the local Goodyear, slap on some new lug nuts and limp home. One bolt seems to have sheared off, so I'm up in the air as to whether driving on three nuts would be feasible, or if I should try to source a new hub ASAP.

993 ownership so far has been a wild, wild ride. Definitely going to be making a few calls today. Funny enough, I remember seeing a video a couple of weeks back of an arena red cab with a similar accident in the same area (passenger side rear wheel), only this was on a crowded freeway and the tire flew off after getting cut by the rim.

If one bolt sheared, you should have four left, not three , so 80% left.

D'oh. Though one is seized so I'm counting that one out.

Would y'all recommend I get it towed to Dumont's in OKC? Or could any old shop just get the wheel I serviceable condition? I'm worried about possible alignment issues or other problems that a quick patch job would miss.

UPDATE: Called Dumont, they recommended I tow it over and have it worked on over the course of a week. Called Peter from Stuttcar in Pasadena for a second opinion, and as he's seen this issue a few times before, he recommended I just get the studs changed out at a local tire shop and be on my merry way.

Sorry I didn't see this.

Cory Jump is an air-cooled specialist, racer and good shop right in N. OKC.

Call him. Planet911 is the shop. He may be able to send someone out to you.

I'd drag my trailer out to help, but am stuck here with no help at the place.

As much as I'd want to get back on the road, I prob wouldn't enjoy the rest of the trip. I'd probably choose Dumonts or another local specialist that could fix it AND give the car a once over.

It's hard to say what the seller is or isn't liable for here regarding the incident and damage, but I'd get the car thoroughly checked out and have all damage well documented by a professional on a lift (not just your word and some iPhone picks taken at awkward angles with the car still on the ground).

If you just slap a wheel on it and drive another several hundred miles, good luck being able to claim after the fact that certain damage (say to the wheel hub) was due to the initial incident or due to driving the car for such a long distance on a possibly compromised part.

Good luck! I'm sure your eager to get home, but you should do what you can to treat yourself as your new car right from the start.

I'm pretty far from any decent P-car shop, would the local tire shop's examination be adequate? Should I get the studs replaced, drive over to aardvark or some place in OKC and have them check it out?

I just drove to and from OKC today to get a right-sized tire and some wheel studs/lugs for my car, didn't really get a chance to check RL until it was too late. I'll see if I can get a hold of Cory tomorrow morning. The tire shop wants to do my car first thing tomorrow morning, but I'd like to see what Corey says and if he might send a guy out here to examine the car. Problem being, the folks around here got pretty offended when I asked them to wait an hour in the morning while I sorted things out with insurance, and I'm afraid I might get tossed out on my *** (again) tomorrow if I wait for Corey's response. Then I'd be forced to either get a tow or drive 100 miles on three functional lugs and a spare tire. Looks like a number of lugs and studs needed to be replaced (was missing a few) and the dealership didn't bother prepping it at all. As it is, I'm not comfortable driving any more without getting those replaced first.

Safety first. If you can get some photos with the wheel off and the car on the lift (which the tire shop should be able to handle), that will be a good first step to documenting what went on. If you can prove there were studs and/or lug nuts missing from the wheel prior to driving off the dealership lot, then you might have some real beef to take up with the dealer legally speaking. I'm not a lawyer so I am going to shut up at this point.

Document the damage, get the car functional again, get your insurance up to speed on what has happened, get you and the car home safely, then worry about dealing with the dealer/seller. Good luck!

I had my 993 inspected before driving it home (across 3 provinces). They found that one of the rear axles was loose, really loose. Could have been a disaster if not found.

On a side note, what is the typical service life of our aluminum lug nuts? I've seen a few insistences of failure lately. Might be abuse (over/under torque) but I just might replace mine for peace of mind.
