Default Oil Loss After Top End Rebuild

I have been monitoring my oil levels consistently after my top end rebuild last year and noticed that I am still losing about a qt every 1500 miles. Tim from Fastlane Porsche put stronger valve guides when putting the engine back together, so I know the valve guides aren't the issue.

Any info would be much appreciated, this is my first P-car.

"Top end"? Just to confirm rings, heads and valve train? Barring no leaks, a quart at 1500 miles is not really excessive (I think) while rings are still seating. How many total miles since top end. If not new rings, then check plugs for fouling. That's a start. Also what oil you using? Good luck

Isn't it stated in the manual that a quart every 1500ish miles is normally acceptable?

A 993 engine with new rings and valves should go close to 3000 miles on a quart of oil. What procedure did you use to seat the new rings?

I have about 20k miles after the rebuild and using 15w50 Mobil 1. I live in California.

When I picked the car up from Tim at Fastlane Porsche, he told me to drive it like I stole it.

Thank you responding

You still didn't advise if you re ringed it. A quart for that mileage isn't bad. Any smoke, plugs fine, leaking at all?

You did not state unequivocally that rings were a part of the top end rebuild. Rings need to be seated properly and I'm fairly certain, driving like you stole it is not an acceptable practice for seating rings.

I need to give Tim a call tomorrow and ask what was done when he did the top end rebuild.

What I meant to say was. I kept the RPM above 3k and varied the RPMs when driving on the freeway.

What are your methods and measurement points for adding and topping up oil? This may be a factor in the game of apparent vs actual oil consumption/loss rates.

If there is any doubt in your mind, take a look at this
'08 thread on oil consumption measurement
- if you have already determined the 'sweet spot' on the dip stick, then please ignore, for I have nothing useful to add.

Hopefully, anytime you steal a car, you tend to drive responsibly. You don't overev, ya vary loads, speeds, rpms and at least wait for oil to get to proper operating temps. I know alot of people say to "run em hard" to break in a motor. To a point I agree , and surely you don't want to baby it.
Let us know what your top end included. Still think you're fine with your consumption.

Hey Garth,

Before I check the oil dip stick, I let the oil thermostat open then drive the car some more until the temp gauge gets to the 9 o clock position. Then I leave the car sitting(Running) for a few seconds to check the dip stick. If oil needs to be added, I add a half quart at a time.

I took a look under the car and noticed some oil leaking from one of the lower valve cover, not much though. Overboosted28 may be right about my consumption being normal.
