Spokes, yes the O2 sensor completes the feedback loop for the air/fuel ratio and will help the engine optimize performance.

I had these similar or perhaps the same bypass pipes on my car and they did reduce the midrange noticeably, to the point that they are now hanging on the wall

They look the same, albeit I haven't removed mine. I have no comparison as they were on my car when I purchased it some 2+ years ago. How did you conclude they reduce midrange? Or what did you replace them with? Mine comes alive at 3K, maybe that is the Varioram.

Hey, I wasn't insinuating you were wrong, just that it may not necessarily reduce lower end output. W/O knowing if he's running stock cams and fuel system, couldn't determine if it was an optimal set up. Most likely not the case here, but sometimes people throw stuff, (chasing HP) at their cars just from manufacturers claims. Also know that there's no need to let it breath if you're not gonna open the valves. No need to open the valves if you're not gonna let her breath :-)

I found that on freeways at 100kph with the bypass pipes the car wouldn't comfortably pull 6th gear as it did before .I changed them over a couple of times to make sure I wasn't nuts and they definately reduce midrange as opposed to having the std cat installed. My car has a LWF and is non VR which makes it more noticible, so with the std flywheel you may not pick it so easily. They certainly do sound good though

Default M150

Think I figured out why there is no O2 sensor, I have the M150 option.

No O2 Catalytic sensor & core.

Interesting. Is this because there was still leaded fuel in NZ back then? I've never been there, but seem to remember reading about it somewhere. Perhaps the Streather book?

Default M150

It is an early '96 Var. I agree, seems an anomaly (against literature), but definitely M150 option for leaded fuel (see below, and under lid label same), and RH Engine Compartment has Pot.

Vehicle Identification No. WP0ZZZ99ZTS311180
Model Designation CARR. COUP
Model 1996
Order Type 993331
Engine code M64.22
Transmission code A50.04

I029
I210
I233
I323
I434
M130 Control and indications in English lettering
M150 Operation with leaded gas
M197 Stronger battery
M219 Differential

Default Upgraded

The journey has finished with installing the Fabspeed XPipe Cat by-pass, Maxflo + tips. Few pics below, only managed to catch a pic of the X-pipe 2/3 installed. Great deep sound, and growl with some throttle, not too loud at idle and cruise.

I'm glad that we could be your solution! I'm glad you like the sound.

As an aside, I noticed in one of your photos showing your x-pipe install that you apparently still have the under engine sound baffle installed. Here in America, most have come to the conclusion that the cover raises engine temps. Accordingly, many (or most) of us have deleted that cover from our installations. It is there to meet noise regulations in Europe, as I understand it. And, I would make the case that your install of the x-pipe just overpowered any impact that cover may have on sound attenuation!

Hi Spokes, if you're ever up top of the south, I'd love to hear it beside my Cargraphic, just to compare.
Cheers - David
