I had same noise on a car a few years ago - we ended up replacing the top hat, the bearing was worn out and had some slop and would bind and then give. However, it can be a number of things, like the spring binding, but it sounds like the noise is coming lower than the top of the shock and is part of the rotation of the hub. Noise can be carried by the metal parts and be very misleading though so be very observant.
Good luck!
Cheers,
Mike

You're right. The vibration could carry from elsewhere. I even felt the vibration slightly on the rotor. The main source of vibration was towards the top of the spring but it could be misleading. I am taking the car to a shop on friday so we will see.
Thanks all!

Did you just take it to the body shop? You would think that knowing that insurance is paying, the shop would try to do as much work as possibe... It actually would have been great way to get new steeking rack and suspension pieces etc.
When I had a little fender bender with bent tie rods on my DD, the dealer went out on the town...new steering rack, new A arm, new shock, new rims etc. I'm not sure how much of that was truly needed, but insurance paid the 7k bill on what now is a 20-25k car.

When you take it to the shop to have the tie rod end replaced have them make sure the steering rack is bolted down to the correct torque, the A arm bushings are in good shape, that all the tie rod and other ball joints are tight as the sound you may be hearing is a component shifting around because it is loose or worn out. I would not worry too much about a damaged steering rack from impact as if the rack was damaged the seals would be leaking and fluid would be all over the place. Andy

I maxed all the insurance claim, so there was no room left. It was 8,400$ in body repair damage and then 1,600$ in dimished value. And the guy who hit me only had a 10k policy.
I looked over the steering rack and no leak what so ever.

Ahhh, so this car was in an accident and tow trucked or flat bedded to a shop...Funny how that was never mentioned early on in the post...
As mentioned earlier, you may need to back away from the crayons! ;(

You know the popping sound has been happening for 6-7 months and it has nothing to do with the popping sound from what I can tell.
Now the bent tie rod was discovered by the body shop that fixed my car after the accident.
My car was flat bed towed to the body shop 25 miles away. And he did put the hooks on the car to get it up, you know that may be it how it happened....
No crayons for me lol. But you all are right I would of felt such a big bent in the tie rod when driving. Well damn that sucks..
It was towed at least 2 months ago when I assume it happened. I don't know if anything can be done with the tow company at this point.

Hmm, just looked at Florida's insurance requirements, and $10k is minimum coverage. But it is also a no fault state, so your insurance should have covered it. So you are driving a $40k+ Porsche with a $10k insurance policy?

I have a 100,000 limit policy. I didn't feel it was necessary to file under my insurance, since it was all fixed up perfect by the at fault drivers policy.
The car was looked at today, the popping sound is normal per viperbob. And not an issue.
The inner and outer bent tie rod on the passenger side and the drivers side for safe measures will be replaced at the shop and an alignment will be done after the holidays.
Thanks all for the advice!!

That really is a massive bend... Unless you were passed out drunk, you would know if you hit it... It would have bent the wheel and ruined the tire too.
I can only think of a couple of scenarios where you can get that kind of damage and not know it.
1) Someone borrowed the car, wrecked it, had the wheel repaired and didn't tell you.
2) Tow truck driver hooked the tie rod and winched the car.
3) Hit something sticking up out of the street with the tie rod... I would assume that other parts under the car would get hit too though...
4) Multiple personality disorder.
How likely is #2?
