Default Tow Hook Hole Missing

I popped the tow hook cover off to see if a tow-hook-mounted license plate would fit and discovered that there is no threaded hole for the tow hook behind the cover. There is only the blank aluminum bumper support plate.

Has anybody run into this before? I didn't find anything with a search. I am guessing that the bumper was replaced some time in the past and the replacement support did not have the tow hook drilled and tapped (?).

How would be the best way to fix this - it it a DIY drill and tap, or are we talking about a body shop at this point?

Hmm...could the bumper be installed upside down and the tow threads are on the other side?

You need to remove the front bumper to know what you have. As Cupcar said, most likely the bumper reinforcement was installed upside down.

Best picture I could find below. Bumper reinforcement is held by only two bolts.

You may be able to tell what is going on if you remove lamps and look through holes revealed to see.

Thanks Cupcar and Blue TTop. I never knew that plate could be installed backwards.

I got my trusty borescope and looked up under the driver's side of the reinforcement plate and there was the threaded tow hook hole!

Now I have a weekend project - remove the bumper and reverse the plate.

When you remove bumper cap, you will probably note that your temperature sensor on the left side is incorrectly installed. When you flip the bumper, note below where temp probe is supposed to mount.

No biggie, I can count the number of times I have used the toe hook - Zero, never. What should you do? Comes under the 12 step rule for Porsche ownership: “accept the things I should not fix, have courage to fix the things I must and have the wisdom to know the difference”

In good fun, Andy

Yeah, I bought an extra Rennline towhook/GoPro mount to use in the rear at the track. My euro bumper cover has a plug on far pass side of license plate area. Removed plug and found what you did in the front. Although my bumper covers are euro, the actual bumper is are U.S. and tow receiver is in the center, behind lic. plate?????
