Default Best ROI on expensive mods

Moving away from value threads, thinking what is the best ROI on $10K+ mods.

1. Conversion to 3.8 or 3.6 heads massaged.

2. Supercharge the 3.6 engine.

3. Regear.

I like regear because it's plug and play without having to retune the ECU. Flexibility of that brings most value back into market.

Unfortunately, ROI and mods are usually mutually exclusive; you usually only get pennies back on the dollar for any/all mods.

That said, of those three, regear all the way

How about which one of those give you best resale value?

I would say S/C since it's the easiest to revert back to stock.

Yes, mods and ROI are mutually exclusive. What you should actually be asking is which will least reduce the value of my car. I would agree that the re-gear would be that.

I would likely not buy a car that I knew had previously been supercharged.

Let me throw a crazy idea..

Swapping a stock C4S engine to a 993TT factory engine/ecu etc.
From, what I have read, these engines are in the $20k range, so not cheap. Is this a viable option and would it give you ROI?

Thoughts?

What else do you need?

1. Boost gauge and other multifunction displays.
2. Whale tail
3. Intercooler

Plus other items. At the end of the day, you ruin a good C4S and end up with a Frankenstein.

If you send it to RUF, then you would get credibility and maybe get $0.40 to the dollar back..

I'll play along .... ROI from the list has to be #3.

A gearbox swap from an earlier 993 production version with its shorter gearing was much talked about here (formally Porschelist) back in the 993's production days. So when an opportunity presented itself my answer was immediate. In 2001 or at about 9,000 miles the PAG Werk 1 Tech's installed a new RoW G50/21. An out right re-gearing or the poor-man's earlier gearbox swap suits the N/A 3.6 well.
The gear spacing puts a smile on your face when getting into the throttle some.
Money well spent is money forgotten.

Full up to date proactive maintenance done.

Complete professional paint correction concours detail with a coating like OptiCoat Pro.

Great ROI.

Items #1 and 2 will be much more than 10k all in.

I am doing a re-gear with 997 GT3 gears, so you know my vote.

not a bad path, but a challenging one.
in addition to engine, you will need;
  • wiring harness
  • turbo length trans or figure out the 1" length differential in some other fashion.
  • clutch actuation differs between the two models, but 4S clutch is better feel than over assisted turbo clutch
  • Turbo specific ECU
  • AC plumbing is more like 95 NA cars, not 96 - 98 NA cars, so if you want AC, plan on buying plumbing

but
when you are finished you can always sell the turbo engine and recoup most of your investment and still have a "stock" 4S.

if you do all the work yourself, ROI won't look too bad.

OP - don't listen to all the nay sayers if you can buy a "good" turbo engine and associated bits and are willing to do the work.

10 months ago I purchased an engine / trans / associated bits from a Turbo S for $29K.
I decided this path was a bit too complex for my schedule and chose to not continue and sold it back to the original owner.

Best ROI on mods?
Buy a hotrodded AC engine from a wrecked race car for 50 cents on the dollar and have at it.

Why not tighten it up even more.

Say a 0.925ish 6th gear and work backwards. I'd tighten 2d through 5th (i.e. fifth would be even shorter than the current 1.06 you have here) and leave a bigger gap btw. 5th and 6th.

This gives you a GREAT sport box with a taller 6th for the highway.
