Engine bay sound identification - video inside !
Can any air-cooled expert help identify what the squeak//squeal//whistle sound may be ?
Here 's hoping the video works : http://tinypic.com/r/33myd7r/8
I am informed it is taken at idle from a cold start. Any ideas ?

Hard to tell from a video but it looks like its the AC belt squeeking. The sound seemed to correspond from the rotation of the AC belt... my supercharger belt squeeks like that for a few minutes while cold. Goes away once warmed up.

In the old days we would spray a small amount of silicone directly on the belt while running. If the sound changed or went away that was the problem. Be exact. Don't just spray wildly. Move to another moving part ie: the alt. belt

Thanks , guys. A big help !
AC belt squeeking : guess not expensive to replace ? If belt lets go , assume nothing else will be affected ?
Fan belt switch roller : is this expensive ? Seem to be lots of posts on this so hope not .

I'm gonna guess that if the belt goes...it's possible that the belt could hit/slap and damage/dent the engine cover. Obviously, a broken belt will also leave you stranded.
Cost shouldn't be too bad....really can't say how much though. Regardless...if your belt is squeeking...you should replace it.

Take a two foot section of garden hose and use it like a stethoscope to pinpoint the source of the sound.
Squirt a little water from a spray bottle on the belts and see if the sound changes or goes away. If it changes it is a belt issue. I not it is a fan blade swiping the shroud, an alternator bearing. The belt switch pulley needing a drop of lubricant on its wheel bearing or your air conditioning compressor bearing.

If you really want to narrow it down without guessing, remove the belts one at a time and start the engine after each removal.
First step though, I'd pull the belt sensor back so that it is not spinning to see if that is the cause. Do this without tools and your hands nearby.
Don't let the engine run without the cooling fan running for any extended period of time.

Another possibility. Did someone recently replace the belts and install the incorrect socket head cap screws because the old ones were screwed up.
Those need to have a shallow head or they will rub on the adjacent pulley.
