Why two oil filters???
I was looking at my 993 and thinking gee why like no earlier 911 engine there are two oil filters. I was theorizing it was because of the extended service intervals for the filters and oil. Then the idea struck me... If one changes their oil once a year or so with an interval of 5000 miles does the engine even benefit from the little 2nd filter. If it was replaced with a pass through cap oil changes on the 993 would be a snap and could be accomplished in half the time and no nasty chassis drips to clean up!
Any thoughts on this?
Andy
Does anyone make a pass through cap?

No hydraulic lifters before the 993. Also, you had the engine mounted oil cooler in that spot on pre-3.6L. Note the 964 Turbo also has a second oil filter, but I've never searched for or heard of an explanation--never owned one, and only serviced a couple back when they were new cars.
And, you can go here too look at what was mounted to the 906/910/various 911 racers in lieu of the engine mounted cooler: http://www.pbase.com/9146gt/image/34396340

I think I read somewhere that Porsche wanted to make certain that the oil was especially clean for the lifters - no lifters on the 3.6 of the 964 but they only have one filter like the earlier 911s.

Ps most oil filters already do have pass through function, but that's not a good scenario.
Sorry can't answer the why question other than likely carryover from earlier design.

While I agree that deleting the small engine filter is not a good idea, I have thought that it might be nice to remote mount it to allow easy access. Not sure where is move it to though.

I think it's great that they "over-engineered" this! I get an oil change annually for $ 175 bucks- at almost 10 bucks quart for Mobile 1 and 2 filters- that's a steal!

It WAS something that just popped in my head as I was typing that response.
(And I'll stand by almost 35 years of dealing with these things, as well as what I remember as a pretty satisfied customer base when I ran my shops.)

Even found a photo, via Streather's book and someone he credited (right side of engine photo, Page 8): http://www.adrianstreather.com/docs/...20overview.pdf
