First 918 on fire :(

A few weeks ago my girlfriend rushed into the house reeking of gas. Turns out a pump at the local gas station 'burped' enough gas to splashing her from head to foot. I still can't figure out exactly how it happened but I saw the result first hand. Quite scary.

The car or the girlfriend?
From kreeshp's 3rd link:
"Wekerle told a conference in Toronto the car caught fire after he overfilled the gas tank."
He saying he attempted to put more in it after it clicked off? Isn't that the only way you can 'overfill' it?
Somewhat relieving for other 918 owners if indeed the case though. Keep your 918 at half tank until they figure out more details.

From CBC news:
"Witnesses say the fire began after the gas overflowed and then ignited from the vehicle's exhaust heat."
It will be interesting to hear just how the gas "overflowed". If Wekerle continued to pump fuel into the tank after the nozzle clicked off, thus causing the fire, that's got to be pretty embarrassing.

It's a problem, because sometimes pumps **** up, don't autostop, and overflow. I've had it happen several times in the 15 years i've been putting fuel in my vehicles.
There's a body seam back there behind the filler area. Does that area open up? I'm guessing that's where the fuel got into the car and onto the exhaust. I doubt this dude splashed fuel over the top of the motor, unless he's friggin' Zoolander and found himself in a freak gasoline fight accident.

the cause of the spark is obvious...the passanger stepped out to get a Fiji water from the mini-mart. When she stood up, a metallic button popped off her blouse, and hit the side of the nozel just as it was removed from the filler.
Maybe PCNA should just schedule routine fuel service into the owner care package. Apparently this guy was just too f&%$@#* stupid to even fill the tank on his own. Maybe a tech session is necesary, naturally...a light crab puff pastry and a pinot noir would be served, maybe stuffed quail?
Every lawn mower, chainsaw, weed wacker, generator(insert small engine appliance here) , has the gas tank immediately adjacent to the exhaust. Somehow the vast majority of us survive with both eyebrows(sorry early cromagnan unibrow rennlisters-you know who you are), and all arm hair intact.

Actually if you look at most cars that have a single exhaust exiting from the rear, it is almost always on the opposite side of the fuel filler point.

Good reporting on 'what happened' at the link below:
http://toronto.ctvnews.ca/video?playlistId=1.2029571
See attached photos from that report.
Although this fire was apparently caused by the 'unexpected' and rather 'misguided/odd' actions of the owner to an apparent overflow/spillage of gas during this fill-up at a gasoline station, I predict that the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration in the US will most likely examine closely this video and discuss with Porsche the likelihood that this 'fueling' error and subsequent fire could be duplicated by a US customer of this model in this country. Unfortunately, this is the type of 'accident' that could create a mountain of headaches for this superb 918 model (and Porsche) since a repositioning of the exhaust on this car is now frankly out of the question!
I sincerely hope this unfortunate mishap doesn't have major consequences for PAG and PCNA, but I am very concerned! Knowing the mentality of the 'nanny-state' culture in our own country, it would not surprise me if they 'step' in to save us from this potential 'fire hazard' for its owner or passenger...and the general public at, or around, gas stations!

I think that the guy will come out well ahead financially. Between Porsche NA, the gas station owner and insurance, I'm sure his lawyers will find enough compensation to be on par with Ethiopia's GDP.
