I think I got my use out of the pads. Funny, I'd have cringed if I ever let the pads on my '84 get down that much, when I was in my tracking days.

Went out this morning and bedded the pads in. I love the Porterfield R4S compound.
Nice photos!

remove calipers
compress pistons
remove pads
clean calipers
peel paper from spiders
place spiders in pistons
install new pads
slide and fasten calipers in place
squeeze brake pedal
voila, spiders are installed
Take great care when compressing the pistons, as pushing dirty pistons in past the seals can cause a leak, or at least degrade the integrity of the seal and cause an issue when things heat up.

I know Ed and Craig know this, but a noob or first timer may just push the pistons all the way in despite dirt or corossion on the OD (outside diameter) of the pistons.

Maybe the sequence should be:
Remove calipers
Remove pads
Clean calipers
Extend pistons out slightly and clean any dirt, debris, or corossion from the OD of the pistons by lightly polishing, using brake fluid and 1000 -1500 grit, wet n dry sand paper...

Ed,

I think my brake warning light comes and goes. Is the brake light an indicator for brake pads or other brake items? My Audi has brake pad sensors and I see wires going to the pictures you posted on FB.

Thanks in advance,
Steve

It was the pad sensors. The pads were pretty used up, as you can see in one of the pics. I've done a couple of nice romps-one to bed the pads and one just for fun-warning light is gone. There is also a sensor for the fluid level, if the float drops too much, that could also pop a light.

I'm not sure if the ABS/ABD system could also trigger one, if there was a fault somewhere?
