Default No Start - Need Help

Lately I have noticed my fuel pump is louder than usual. I can hear it with the car started at idle. Sort of a high whine sound.

Yesterday, car worked fine. Today, no start. I'm thinking the fuel pump has gone south but wanted to confirm here. Original 1994 fuel pump. Here is what I have done so far and the results:

1. Turn key, no usual fuel pump sound.
2. Replace DME, same result.
3. Jumped 30 & 87b. Fuel pump makes noise but it is not a high whine. More like a low frequency "whirrrr" and definitely not a normal sound like I'm used to.
4. Jumped 30, 87b & 87. Hear "whirr" , as above. Attempt to start. No start but a pop hear and there.

What else to try before fuel pump replace?

Check fuse No 26 too, it's for the fuel pump, should be 25 Amp.

Thanks. Checked. Fuse still good.

When is the last time you replace the fuel filler? That would be the first thing I would change from a cost stand point....

Fuel filter has about 2K miles on it, but is about 2 years old given the time I spent on my engine rebuild.

Could be something a simple as a rotational sensor a little out of position. Don't jump on the issue being the fuel pump. If you suggest a fuel pump as the culprit to your local technician it will definitely turn out to be the problem, $1000 later and buy the way he replaced a sensor/ intake seal, oxygen sensor ETC. also while he was in there, just because.... because the car would not start when he just replaced the $400 fuel pump. I would take it to a guy who can properly diagnose the problem.

DME relay causes this a lot. Just had it happened on a 964 I got a couple of weeks ago as well as several P-cars trough the years.

as stated, you need to check your fuel pressure.

Peter,

Pick up a can of starting spray, sometimes called hot shot, starting ether, etc.
Next, have someone spray a little in the intake as you crank the car. If it attempts to start/run, you know something in the fuel delivery is suspect.
If there is no change, it is generally something electrical, like fuse, fuel pump, DME relay, timing sensor, ignition switch, etc.

Replaced fuel pump (couldn't hurt, 20 YO). No Start. Funny thing is now when I jumper 30 & 87 and 30 & 87b the fuel pump does not start. Nothing. If I apply 12V directly at the pump it works. Seems like the pump is not getting juice. What to try next?

Battery is at 12.8 volts.

You positive that fuse isn't blown? Did you put a new one in or test it?

Have you measured Voltage at the pump? Not applying it directly, but just measure it thru the car's wiring?

On the 95's the O2 sensor and the fuel pump are on the same circuit, right? It might be worth checking your O2 wiring for any heat damage. If it lost it's insulation, it could be shorting out and causing a voltage drain. Unlikely, it would probably pop the fuse, but might be worth taking a look at.

Have you used the key fob to lock and unlock the doors immediately before attempting to start the engine? I don't mean to be sarcastic....People sometimes forget to do this.

EDIT: Just noticed yours is a '95....Not sure if it has the drive lock.

Will check the above and report back.
