Default Mufflers in LA

My car's got aftermarket mufflers of unknown origin... and one has just failed, likely beyond repair (can exploded, full of cracks).

One option is to revert to used OEM -- does anyone local have a used set of Bischoff's they're willing to part with?

I'm also considering Fister setup but it doesn't look like they have a stage 1 anymore and stage 2 & 3 sound like they might be so loud I'd get a ticket. Has this happened to anyone?

Stage II's are very mild, most would never know that your exhaust wasn't stock.

They have a visible external bypass (not legal in CA, V.C. 27150a) -- had any trouble passing the visual inspection?

No problem so far and haven't ever heard of anyone ever having a problem.

I have III's. Located in the South Bay. Let me know if you want to hear 'em in person. They're really not too loud.

I guarantee post-eargasm you'll be sold vs. the II's, or any other aftermarket exhaust for that matter.

III's sound pretty darn good! It's not over the top loud.
Let's put it this way, once you get the exhaust you will forget you have a stereo in your car

Eargasm... LOL

IIIs aren't as loud as Supercups, and I don't think those generated any tickets.
My neighbor's Gallardo with stock exhaust is louder than the IIIs, and he isn't shy about hitting it.

It comes down to personal preference, you can't really go wrong with IIs, IIIs or even LPMM.

I have II's and no problem with noise nor the smog people. They are modified OEM cans, so I didn't expect any either. Noise is nice but unobtrusive.

You're gonna be hard pressed to find a smog "tech" that'll actually get under there and look up behind all the hot piping to see what the cans look like.

Default Fabspeed Hommie...

I have Fabspeed MaxFlows, great sound, extremely well made, lighter than the stock 993 mufflers, BUT they ain't cheap, about $1,200 a set, new. For those wanting to by the FD Motorsports mod, you'll need two (2) cores in decent shape. If you don't have them, you may spend $500 to $600 for the cores. I spent $600 in muffler cores a few years back.

….then you need to spend about $500 for the conversion…well worth it, but you have spent $1,100 or so. The question then becomes for some, do I spend $1,200 for new Fabspeeds, or, potentially spend about the same money for modified stock cans, assuming I have to go out and buy the cores.

I have had several FD Motorsports versions of mufflers, Stage 1 as well as Stage II, all just fine. I have Fabspeed mufflers now (Bought them used), love them…run them with the stock catalytic converter…nice mellow sound, but subtly aggressive.

Reporting back... I went stock for a while, wasn't happy with it. Fister III's in the car for several weeks now and it's a blast. Sounds great in all conditions, shouldn't have wasted so much time agonizing over the decision!

New small ovals too. Looks clean, sounds mean. :-)

The C4 I just acquired came equipped with RSR Mufflers (Bischoffs). Nice growl, but I want more bite. Was considering Sport cats, but I love the sound of the Fister III's so much I just ordered another pair. If you want to buy my RSR Bischoffs, you can PM me. But personally I would go with the Fister III's!

Cheers!

Below is copy of 13 year old post that is relavent to issues raised,

The facts:
1-Made in Australia by Monty
2-100% 304 Stainless Steel
3-Free flowing
4-Weigh 4 kilo each
5-Fit is perfect, can use stock tips
6-Lifetime warranty
7-Steve Weiner at Rennsport can probably get them

I got these muffler for a few reasons. Frankly my Motorsound mufflers were not loud enough for my taste and Robin's great RSR mufflers were also not quite loud enough to suit me. I like the Monty's for a number of reasons. I liked being able to talk to the person who builds them. Monty said the fit would be same as stock, that I could use my Porsche large chrome oval tips, and that they weighed 8 kilo for the pair. He was right on target with his representations. It was important to me that I be able to fit those nice tips and have them be adjustable just like on the stock mufflers.

As far as sound goes that is of course subjective. To me they are definitely louder than my Motorsound mufflers and to Robin's mufflers. The Monty's have a much deeper throaty sound, very much of a deep raspy rumble at idle.

While I have not heard the MaxFlo mufflers I am told that the Monty's are not as loud as the MaxFlo.

Below is a photo of what an old motorsound looked like . I obtain that muffler soley to see what they looked like inside
