That said, certain environments call for the thicker stuff when outside air temps are over 100 deg F and/or an engine has a lot of miles on it where engine clearances are wider.)
As always Steve, many thanks for the expert advice and info. I've been using the V-Twin 20W-50 for years now (previously in my 930 and now in my 993). However, the colder weather this winter in NC has me wishing I had a thiner oil to fall back on. What brand of 15W-40 can you recommend?

EDIT: I should also add, that I'm looking for something "off the shelf", if possible.

I'm using 5w-40 for years and my engine is flawless.

The temp here is 99% of time above 50 F.

^^^^Yeah, I take those comments with lots of seasoning. And to remove any ambiguity, please be more specific; what brand!? If I wasn't clear, I'm on Mobil 1 V-Twin 20W-50, and looking for something thiner yet safe and compatible for these engines.

The Joe Gibbs Driven DT50 (15-50) and DT40 (5-40) contain 1200ppm ZDDP.

I'm ok w/ M1 15w-50 but not 0w-40

i'd think about 4t if it was available w/o jumping through hoops

The potential issue w/ 'Racing' oil is the lack of detergents and stabilizers that prolong oil change intervals.

Bill, I know i'll regret this, but I've been leveraging the 30% off and free shipping from Pep boys as of late. I am in the NE and usually find it on the shelves, but this way I get it delivered and best deal. Granted I only do oil changes annually, due to limited driving, but it doesn't keep me from having 4-5 changes "in Stock" at all times.

Weird…checking the Mobil site and the ZDDP levels are very different for 4T.

The online justification for not using 0w40 has been a moving target since day 1 (i probably should have quoted the earlier posts too). If 0w40 lacks enough ZDDP and/or the equivalent anti-scuffing additives than ok. But what is enough ZDDP? And what are people basing that on, previous oil formulations? (can't wait to hear what Porsche Classic says at the TechTactics presentation this weekend) And throwing oil onto the fire...

SG oil from the late '80's typically had 1200ppm ZDDP
SF oil before that had 1500ppm

I don't recall any hoopla at the 1200ppm level w/ SG oil

I live in the Netherlands and for my 993 I changed to Porsche classic oil 10W60. I noticed that the oil pressure when warm is slightly higher (as it is 60), cold start is not a problem (10 is slightly higher than 0 and I'm not using it when it is below 5 degrees)

Further more as already mentioned the pressure when warm is higher which means the flow is lower (viscosity). However the amount of heat to be dissipated has to be transmitted by less flow. From my point of view this is the reason I noticed slightly higher oil temperatures (delta T).

I may be tempted to opt for 5W 40 (motul) , 0W50 or maybe 15W50

I run Motul 15-50, 300 V oil.

I like to have Porsche explain to me how there new oil is better than what I'm using.

My contact at the dealer did not know who is making this oil for Porsche

After a bit of research the following offering may be a solution for those running 20W50 V Twin (or other brand equiv) that would like a lighter weight oil that meets our aircooled zddp needs.

Castrol Power RS Racing 4T Motorcycle Oil - Full Syn avail in 5W40, 10W40 and 10W50 all sitting at 1200 ppm zddp wise.

Almost 100% sure it is avail at Walmart in the US along with their version of V Twin 20W50 full syn.
