For my '97 cab, I'm trying to decide between:
TOPTNL (a nice worger)
WNTRH8R (we get a lot of snow in my state)
DANKE (for the drivers who let me merge)
I'll have to decide next week. Any votes are appreciated.

How does this work in the states?
Do you just think of a plate and as long as it is totally unique you can then register it to your car for only a few dollars????
I can see some of you have said the "you got it back"? Do you have to re-register every year??
Take a look at what we have to do in the UK!!

Who needs to pay for vanity? Roll the dice with whatever is issued. My friend moves back from Michigan last summer, and she's issued a plate with the letters "FXU." Someone asleep for those 1K plates now floating around CA. (Not on a Porsche, just a Mazdaspeed 3.)

In Michigan we have a website where you can dream up your plate & check availability instantly - kind of fun to see what you can get away with over here that would never be possible back home in the UK! As an ex pat - I always thought BOLOX2U was a funny one that is still available.

Registration is every other year regardless of how many times you change your plate. You can keep your old plates and hang them up in the garage. We also have no annual inspection or emissions testing requirement.
Cheers,
