Tech Tactics 2014
Tech Tactics is a day dedicated to Porsche technical information. This event is for the casual information gatherer to the every day Porsche mechanic. Get the latest information directly from the source. From how to balance Weber carburetors for your 1970 Porsche 911S to understanding how your Cayenne Diesel works.
The event was born in 1980 in the heart of Zone One at the Harley Hotel north of Harford, CT. It quickly outgrew this facility and moved to the Springfield Sheraton where it resided for over twenty years. By the 1990’s it was the premier technical weekend for PCA with some renowned speakers; such as, Norbert Singer, Phil Hill, Derek Bell, and Brian Redman.
By 2007 attendance was dwindling and new venue was in order. The event was moved to the Farnbacher-Loles facility in Danbury, CT. This move regenerated interest in the event with over 250 attendees. With the demise of the F-L facility, we have moved again and have changed the direction slightly in terms of the format.
Tech Tactics 2014 will be hosted at the PCNA Training facility in Easton, PA. This facility is perfect for a “hands on“ type of event. This facility is used to train Porsche technicians on the intricacies of the new Porsches. It is equipped with the state of the art classrooms with lifts and drive train assemblies which will be available for our event,.
Tech Tactics East is limited to 125 entrants. If the event is over subscribed we plan to hold an identical event on March 1st. The day will consist of lectures by PCNA Field Specialists and members of the PCA Technical Committee.
When you register, look at the topics covered under each colored-coded class. If you pick RED, you will attend those classes. Since we want to keep the size of the classes manageable, switching classes will not be allowed. This will ensure an ideal experience for each 'student'. If the colored-coded class you wish to attend is sold out, you may get on a wait list or choose another color. Also consider attending on Saturday instead.
Back for a second year: Tech Tactics Diecast Model Concours! This will be a people choice event with the winner receiving a special prize. So dust off your favorite die-cast model (any scale), polish up the wheels and bring it to the event for display. Please only one model per entrant.

Becker, Dave (Porsche Cars North America)
Topic: 2014 911 Turbo & GT3
David started working with Porsche dealers on Long Island, NY in 1983 at Island Porsche Audi as a Technician. From 1983 to 2005, David has had various positions in the Porsche service industry at Silver Star Motors and Manhattan Motorcars. While at Manhattan Motorcars, he taught multiple automotive classes at a community college in the Bronx. Also at Manhattan, he won the 2000 Porsche Service Cup and represented the U.S.A. in the International Service Cup Competition in Germany. David joined PCNA in February 2005 and is currently training dealer technicians in “Diesel” and “Hybrid” technology besides Basic and Advanced Automotive Technology. In 2012 assisted Porsche Academy in certifying Porsche Dealer Technicians in the Worldwide Porsche Certified Technician Program.
Calder, Steve (Michelin Tire)

Steve received a mechanical Engineering degree from Virginia Tech 1996. After graduation he joined Michelin and spent four years as an industrial engineer at a tire plant. Then Steve became a test driver at the Michelin Proving grounds. Three years ago he hung up his driving shoes to become a Product Category Manager for Michelin high performance tires.
Dong, Derrick (PFC Brakes)

Derrick has long association with motorsports. For the last seventeen years, he served the PFC Brake Company as Director of Motorsports. He has a total of 39 years of professional racing brake experience including 21 years as technical liaison with Tilton Engineering.

Owen Hayes is a new addition to Porsche Motorsport North America since July 2013 as Director of Operations, responsible for overseeing all technical aspects of the organization in North America. However, Owen has been working with Porsche Motorsport in Germany since 1999.Over the course of his career in Weissach, Owen has had several roles and has been involved in various projects including race/development engineer for the Porsche LMP2000 project, race engineer and team manager for the Porsche Junior team, race/development engineer for the Porsche RS Spyder project while being stationed as the resident Porsche technical representative with Penske Racing for 3 seasons, race/development engineer for the Porsche 911 GT3 R Hybrid program and most recently as race engineer for the Porsche LMP1 project.

Currently celebrating his 30th anniversary with the company, Roger Hood has been one of ExxonMobil’s primary field testing engineers for more than a decade. Based in Paulsboro, New Jersey at ExxonMobil’s research and testing facility, Hood began his career with ExxonMobil in 1981.From 1981 to 1999; he was an integral part of various lubricant product developments, including Mobil 1. As part of his work, he has led laboratory engine and drive train testing, used oil analysis and engine deposit evaluation and drive train gear, bearing and seal distress evaluation. Beginning in 2009, he began trackside technical support of Mobil 1 Racing with race lubricant development, used oil analysis and various deposit and component distress evaluation. From 1999 to 2009, he was an essential member of the Mobil 1 lubricant development group as a field test engineer with Mobil 1 proof of performance testing and laboratory support for Mobil 1 racing. Most recently, from 2009 to today, he’s led U.S. based motorsports engineering, providing Mobil 1 Racing field trackside technical support to ExxonMobil’s racing partners including NASCAR, American Le Mans (ALMS), Indy Racing League (IRL), grass roots racers country wide and various other engine builders.
Newton, Jim (Automobile Associates)

Jim is founder and now co-owner of Automobile Associates, which has been specializing in repair and maintenance of German cars for over thirty years. In addition to preventative maintenance, Automobile Associates has built and restored many nationally award winning Porsches including several Manhattan winners. He has also built much class winning Porsches that compete in the PCA Club Race Program. Jim is an excellent speaker and has traditionally been the opening speaker at Tech Tactics.
Paterek, John (Paterek Brothers)

John has been a PCA member since 1972 and joined the 356 Registry in 1975 as member number 71. John has been on the National Tech Committee since 1985 in charge of Interiors/Exteriors. John has chaired the Zone One Concours for twenty-six years and been a speaker at Tech Tactics for thirty-two years. He is the previous owner of the award winning 1953 America Roadster, which is presently displayed at the Porsche Factory museum on loan from the Wolfgang Porsche collection. John and his brother Ray are owners of Paterek Brothers, which is a premier Porsche restoration facility in Chatham, NJ. John presently displays his award winning 1962 356 S90 cabriolet.

With a degree in Business Administration and Industrial Engineering from the Karlsruhe Institute of Technology, Daniel started his career with Porsche in 2006. As a Project Purchaser for the Porsche and VW cooperation project “Colorado” he was responsible for the global sourcing of climate control and roof systems for the Cayenne and Touareg. In 2008 he switched to marketing and became Product Manager for the 911. There he was dealing with the development of worldwide product strategies. Since mid-2011 he has been Manager for Marketing and Sales of the Macan and as such he is now responsible for controlling and monitoring of all sales relevant topics.
Verdiales, Lou (PCA Technical Committee)

Lou Verdiales owns and operates Aero Dynamics, A Porsche repair shop located in Port Orange, Fl. Lou studied mechanical engineering and is a FAA certified pilot, airframe and power plant mechanic. Lou has been an avid Porsche enthusiast since 1976, especially the technical aspects as they relate to maintaining and enhancing performance. He is an active member of the PCA Space Coast Region. Lou hosts technical discussions at his shop as well as social meetings.
For many years Porsche turbocharged models have been a favorite and having devoted many hours of research and study Lou enjoys sharing that experience with other enthusiasts. A native of New Jersey Lou resides in Port Orange with his wife Celine, son Luis and daughter Francesca.
Warnke, Trent (Porsche Cars North America)

Trent started his career as a co-op student at a tier 3 automotive supplier while studying engineering at Kettering University. Upon graduation, Trent moved to Stuttgart, Germany to pursue his Masters in Automotive Engineering. While in Germany he worked for Robert Bosch GmbH on automotive braking systems. After two years in Germany, Trent moved back to Michigan to work for General Motors in the hybrid development department. After two years working on hybrid systems, Trent became the lead engineer responsible for development and validation of the powertrain for the Chevrolet Volt. His team developed/validated the Volt powertrain taking it from early prototype vehicles all the way to production. Trent supported the Volt program after launch for almost a year before moving to lead the development of the second generation Chevrolet Volt. Trent left GM and joined Porsche Cars North America (PCNA) in June of 2012 as the E-Mobility Project Manager. He is responsible for preparing all departments within PCNA for future Porsche hybrid and plug-in hybrid vehicles.

Is this where I mention it's a bone chilling 45 in the shop this morning? And dry. Desert dry. Was so glad I have the heated seats in this new "modern" acquisition.
