Default Ownership experience of the common dude who wants to be cool in a 993

This is what happens when you're young, need to have a 993, don't wrench, and don't visit rennlist
http://www.thetruthaboutcars.com/2013/08/engineered-for-magic-everyday-part-2/

Engine pad delete, solid mounts and shift rod, drilled airbox, loud mufflers and then complain about NVH??

This response from the peanut gallery cracks me up:

"Get a Camry SE, pull the muffler, put nice front seats, put 20″ tires and wheels on, better brakes, and some loose pans and pots in the trunk. Should be as fast and loud as your Porsche."

He needed to check the pressure to realize the tire was flat?

I'm sure that some here know him, as he was on the RL 993 NYE runs. That car must be a basket case to spend that much on maintenance though...

I think he's taken some literary liberties in that piece...

It seems to me the only purpose of that article is to brag about how he owns a 993 and spent $10k on it at the age of 23. Most of the maintenance issues he encountered are common on any 10 year old cars.

He would have been better off buying a preowned 997 carrera.

The 993 aircooled can require some sorting given its age when you buy one used.
BUT, once sorted they can be smooth sailing and an experience best reserved for purists.

I buy em and sort em all day long because i love them. They are a great experience.

"In my previous entry I recounted how I forsook other marques and at the eleventh hour turned my hymnal to 993 while shopping for my first car, but I didn’t elaborate on why I had such an interest in the ***-engined **** slot cars in the first place."

Nice description.

I've read his stuff

I love the truth about cars though. Here is my favorite porsche write-up ever:

So I think back to 23 (we had a thread on this exact thing over in OT a few weeks ago), and try to compare. Yeah, I'd had a '68 for five years. This would have been in 1985. After rebuilding the gimp engine that stranded me on a 12 hour road rally (aka street racing, back then), I figured out the what's what and scrounged parts to make it into an MFI 2.0S. Then, what the hell, build up a 2.7 into RS spec, while making the chassis into a widebody. And plenty of DE and autocross duty by that time.

And this guy can't even change a fan belt?

For the record, my 4S has cost me about $2K for 50K miles, in over 9 years of ownership. Yeah, deferred things on it, and one of the reasons I picked up the 996 Turbo so I could take it off the road to spend the $3-4K on it to pretty much completely refurbish it.

And this guy can't even change his front brakes? Not to mention he gets bent over for $1100?

At least the 23yo had a memorable pic taken while writing part one of his Porsche adventures:
